Medebach Things to Do

Around Medebach, the skiingfacilities are limited to Küstelberg (Schlossberg), but around the only 15 kilometres further situated Winterberg one can find the best facillties in the Sauerland. This village is at 700 mtr above sealevel and the surrounding hills stretch (only) up to 851 at the "Kahler Asten", the highest hill in the middle-mountains. Around this and some other hills there are excellent skipistons (only limited in length (of course). Besides the skiingfun here are a bob-track and roodlehills.

Yihaaaa, the nicest thing to do in wintertime.

In the restaurants of the marketdome one can take it easy with a dinner, without having to cook oneself. There is a lot of choice from a-la-card until a snackcorner and especially for the many Dutch that come to this Centerparks bungalow-park, there is even a pancakerestaurant (our national pride - haha). Anyway, this last is ideal for families with (small) children as they normally love pancakes. Ilja sure did!

Cars are essential in Hochsauerland as only limited this area is enclosed by railroads. Busservices are however frequent. If by car one should however take care for the unusual by taking snowchains with them. Obviously one doesn't use them at all, but getting stuck in the snow in a exceptional blizard is definately no fun.

If not with car, one also can use a sled (-:

Best thing after skiing or langlaugfen (ski-cross-country) is to relax in the evening. This can be done in a hot suiting bath in the bungalow, so the muscles relax and can be optimised for the next days ski-adventure. The centerparcs also offers great relaxation in the sport-facilities of the central building (in this case called the "Marketdome"). Here is a wonderful subtropical adventurebath (in general also much fun for children). Furthermore there are saunas that are ideal to take away muscular stress.

Lately winters are not as rich of snow as before. It's a shame as now you are depending on only a few weeks with good and enough snow to have wintersportfun (langlaufen, skiing and riding a sleigh). So in wintertime either book last-minute with the risk that you're just too late or do not demand a snowguaranteed holiday as chances are not that large anymore.
We had the luck to be this year in the right moment and experienced fresh beautiful snow.

Some only focus on Sauerland as soon as there is enough snow for some wintersporting. That is also the reason why one in these few weekends immediately end up in a huge trafficjam towards the gates of this wonderful middle-mountainarea, just West of the densly populated Ruhr-area and The Netherlands.
Therefor it can actualy also be very intrested in Summertime. The roomrates for staying in hotels or most excellent and friendly pensions, inns as well as campgrounds, is great in summertime. To escape the business of cities, industry and daily hectic ... the closebuy Sauerland is a perfect solution. One doesn't have to drive so far and still feels on holiday (especially the Dutch that need just some mountains or even hills and another language to enjoy that). (-:

Favorite thing: The winterweekends that Sauerland has enough snow to prepare skipistons is sadly enough decreasing. The snow-canons only bring rescue to the facilities, when temperatures are under 3 degrees Celsius, something that is also slowly disappearing in these parts of Europe. But, when there is snow the skiing-possibilities are still limited, though the "langlaufers" (ski-cross-country) find paradise in the wonderful foresty forests of Hochsauerland and there are many kilometres of prepared tracks that lead through a magnificent winter-wonderland. Popular startingcentres are Winterberg and Willingen, but don't forget to pay attention to the little places surrounding these mass-tourist-centres when there is snow. Seeking more rest, then look at the conditions here.

Fondest memory: Langlaufen with my former MEAO-class in a group with Ron, Kor, Carolien, Ingrid, Renee and Monique. We had the best fun possible.
