Things to Do

Tiled houses

Tiled houses, Mettmann

sandysmith Says:  This quiet courtyard showed some nice examples of the tile-cladded houses around the village fountain. It also affords a view of the chuch here - its brick facade seemed a bit out of place with the rest of the buildings though.

Church Square

Church Square, Mettmann

sandysmith Says:  There is a large square around the very English looking church in Mettmann. Christmas markets are held here and apparently its lovely to see as not as commercialised as the the big german city ones.

Old Houses

Old Houses, Mettmann

sandysmith Says:  Some of the houses in Mettman looked really quaint with their wonky black and white timbers. We would see much more of this style later in the day at Hattingen.

Lichtspielhaus

Lichtspielhaus, Mettmann

sandysmith Says:  This is the cinema in Mettmann and its supposed to be the oldest in Germany. Well whether its true or not I don't know but seeing a film here would certainly be different to that at the more modern multiplex equivalents.

Pastel Coloured Houses

Pastel Coloured Houses, Mettmann

sandysmith Says:  As well as the tile cladded houses there were more traditional pastel coloured styles too. This was a favourite one in front of the horse fountain, and adorned with a tree decoration around its gabled window.

Tile Style

Tile Style, Mettmann

sandysmith Says:  Here's a close up of how the houses are cladded with interlocking tiles - quite an unusual style that I hadn't seen before - except upon a roof!

Quiet Squares

Quiet Squares, Mettmann

sandysmith Says:  It was so peacuful wandering around the quiet squares. Many of the houses were half covered in slate and had green shutters at the window. I was surprised to see so many flower boxes still in bloom too.

Mettman

Mettman, Mettmann

sandysmith Says:  This little place near Dusseldorf means "Mincemeat Man" in the literal translation. Its not a big tourist place but the buildings are lovely with their slate architectural style.

Neanderthal Museum

Neanderthal Museum, Mettmann

sabsi Says:  Neanderthalers lived in the Neanderthal - hence the name ;-) There is a valley close to Mettmann where remains of those old guys were found and a museum was built there. I haven't been inside yet but saw it from the outside. It looks great! I will go there as soon as I will...

Old cinema

Old cinema, Mettmann

sabsi Says:  This might be the oldest still running cinema in Germany. Heard it was but found no evidence! Oh well, it's cute, anyway!

Market Square

Market Square, Mettmann
