Monschau, arriving by car or buss
Getting here by car is most easy, though there are several bustouroperators offering guided tours from larger towns in the surrounding (Köln, Aachen, Bonn etc.). When travelling through Germany, the directions for drivers is easy, however … Monschau is still named “Montjoie” in French-speaking Wallonia and people who travel from here should be guided by this name on the road signs. Only in 1918 the name Monschau returned to the village officially until that time even in German “Montjoie” (it became that in 1543) was used frequently.
By foot preferably or by touristtrain
Monschau is small and when one parked the car on one of the entrance parkingplaces, a walkingtour can get you anywhere in Monschau. However, for the more lazy people, Monschau also has a little tourist train running frequently from the main parking lot Burgau. It makes an almost impossible round through town, taking alleys that the locomotive barely fits through. It runs in the high season and the drive takes around thirty minutes.
makes it possible to drive from Cologne or Koblenz straigth into Monschau.
the AA Club...called ADAC in Germany has maps for free, when member.
and the Train is a real good idea
die deutsche Bundesbahn..german Train..
website is in 4 lingos..so don't worry!

I travelled to Monschau through Belgium border. From Brussels ,we drove past Eupen ,plan to use N 67 to cross boder from Belgium into Germany and arrive Monschau from northern part of the city, but when we past Eupen the road sign said N 67 was closed because of road construction so we have to do a little detour down the N 68 instead. It's just a little pity that we didn't use N 67 cuz I heard that the scenery along that road is so beautiful, but finally along N 68 it's beautiful too and I thought it must be very similar scenery, like this...in the picture. The day I went there(June),the weather forcast rain,so the sky was overcast almost all day.Total time driving from Brusells to Monschau was about 1.30 minutes.
I arrived Monschau from southern part of city and park at carpark Burgau that located at southern part of town ,that is the biggest car park of the city,it's capacity is about 320 vehicles, some part is under the roof of car park building(same price)
There are another 3 car parks on the north(87 cars),west (60)and east side(93) Each side of town ,they will have information panels show visitors in advance how to best reach the parking around the Old Town. The sigh will show where and how many vehicles is still available to park. And from each car park we can reach the city by walking in just a few minutes.
The city has policy to reduce vehicle to enter the town to protect historical buildings ,surroundings, and quality of life in charming narrow cobble streetn. The city itself has very few places for parking so it's better to park in those car parks and walk into town.
If you booked any hotel, only some has car parking for customer but mostly not for free,I don;t know the rate. You may check from their website or call.
For all those car park fee per hour is 1.5 Euro , full day fee is 5 euro.I was lucky that I chose to park under the roof and meet a couple who just preparing the leave the carpark ,we parked right next to them and they gave us their parking ticket that available until 1pm the next day.Thank them a lot,so..we were so thirsty now....Lets have some drink then...we have 5 euro to spend now : )
I didn't try this kind of Choo choo train but I try to find some information for anyone who are intersted in it.It's good if anyone come with young children ,they may like it.On the website they said why take the trouble (the town 's street are up and down hill) to explore Monschau's sights on foot if you can do so conveniently with this train.. Stadtbahn ... You can also listen to information about historical clothmaking town as well.
It's about 30-minute round trip and take you all the way up to the castle for a panoramic view of the town and valley below and of the imposing Haller Ruine.
