The present Rathaus (town hall) consists of a building dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. It is connected to a modern flat roof building. On the park side of the older building you will find the plate of Neuenrade which was hanging at the gable of the former Rathaus at Erste Strasse.more
The metal town model is on top of some leftovers of the city wall dating back to 1355. The model shows the city at around 1600. Today the castle and the walls as well as the city gates are no longer here. It must once have been a cute little town. The basic street scheme with the three parallel main roads still exists today.more
You will find the Gerichtslinde (court linden tree) in the Park am Wall. It is over 900 years old. Incidently, nearby there used to be also a court house and a pranger where you will now find a place called Gertruden-Apotheke. So in the spot where you will find the Gertruden-Apotheke there used to be the first Rathaus (town hall) in the 14th...more
From the founding time of the city only the tower is original, even though the spire was only added much later. The tower belonged to the city’s defense system. So it is recommended that all small kids visit this tree as a ritual to get rid of their comforter. I thought this is a lovely idea. Apparently it originates...more
I think this is the toilet with the funniest opening times I’ve ever seen. It is located by the Gertrudenmarkt around Zweite Strasse and is only open on Fridays during the market from 13.00 till 19.00. The other public toilet is by the Rathaus but is only open during office hours.more
On Kohlberg you will not only find the previously mentioned hiking trails but also a memorial cemetery. Today at the Waldfriedhof there are 21 people from the former Soviet Union, Poland and Yugoslavia buried. Apparently they were commited to official duty and died in nearby SGV-Kohlberghaus which was used as a hospital. I wouldn’t be surprised if...more
The name Quittmannsturm means Quittmann’s tower but if you look at the ending in German you can recognise the word “sturm” which is storm in English. After the tower was built in 1892 a storm destroyed it in winter 1983 and it had to be rebuilt. Today it is very safe to climb, I have been up there and enjoyed the view in several directions. The...more
