World War II bombs spared one single block of old Paderborn, North of the Dom behind the Pader springs, in Hathumarstraße and Auf den Dielen. This is the only street in town where you can still see a row of half-timbered houses. The prettiest house of them all ist the so-called Adam and Eve House. The woodcarvings on the gable are full of pictures:...more
The chapel between Dom and Pfalz was erected under Bishop Meinwerk in the first quarter of the 11th century. Rumours tell that it was built by Greek builders, but according to experts these rumours cannot be trusted.Anyway, the chapel with its slender columns, dome vaults and three naves of equal height is unique North of the Alps. Whenever the...more
The little chapel at the far end of the cloister on the way to the three hares window is dedicated to the victims of World War II. It is decorated with mosaics all over. Despite its bright colours it is easily overlooked, as it is rather dark and hidden behind a gate.Agnes Mann, who is mostly known for stained glass windows, created the mosaics in...more
The Kaiserpfalz behind the cathedral is a reconstruction. In 1964 archeologists found the foundation of Charlemagne's palace, the very same place where king and pope had negotiated the coronation in 799. Until 1977 the archeologists also unearthed the much better preserved palace of Heinrich II, built in the early 11th century. The finds allowed...more

Alte Residenz is a nice place with seats outdoor in front of restaurant's entry under a few trees, and along the main road of Paderborn's Neuhaus. Pretty noisy but still very nice to dine out there since it's joy to visit in Paderborn anyway, also Alte Residenz is located right around the Neuhaus Castle. Restaurant's atmosphere, service, and...more
Alex's is located in the downtown part of the city and across from Feuerstein. This place has the best hamburgers I have ever eaten and the best part is that it is cheap! Definitely the hamburgers because when I was studying over in Paderborn last year I was missing American food and I was craving a hamburger so when I saw they had it on their...more

At a convention in Münster on historical church vestments last year I learned about the fashion problems of catholic priests. The colours and general shape of the vestments is prescribed but still there are details in cut and shape, material, images, symbols and ornamentation to decide upon. This fashion store in Grube caters for all those needs. Most probably you are not a potential client, but a look into the shop windows adds to feeling the flair of catholic Paderborn.
The shop next door sells church silver, candles, crosses, figures of saints and anything a catholic church might need.
What to buy: Church vestments and all other items a catholic church needs.
What to pay: I cannot tell, for I am obviously not a client of this shop.

Paderborn is located in a rural part of Northwest-Rhineland and a car trip there is a treat for those who want to find quiet fields of swaying green grass and the clean air of the quiet German countryside. There are plenty of those lovely, little lakes in Paderborn, surrounded by woods and parks providing with sport activities. The lake where at visitors can rent a wooden, simple-small boat, is located right beside the ropes/climbing course. Beautiful to paddle on a lake's shallow water circled by pure green. Beautiful also it has less a sporting spirit but romantic and refreshing.
Germany’s shortest river, the Pader, has a total length of 4 kms from the springs to the point where it flows into the Lippe. The peculiarity is that the Pader is born a river. It does not grow from little streams becoming bigger streams, then a tiny river, etc. The springs in the centre of Paderborn are so strong and produce so much water that it...more
To support the mission among the pagan Saxons who had only recentl become Christians the second Bishop of Paderborn, Badurad, wanted the relics of a saint in his church. In 836 he asked his colleague in Le Mans and received the mortal remains of Saint Liborius, a former Bishop of Le Many who had lived in the late 4th century. The relics were...more
"Favourite" is the wrong headline for this...All over the city centre you find boards with old photos. There are always two pictures. One shows what that location looked like before the Second World War, with all the intact historical architecture. The second is a photo of the ruins in 1945. You can compare to the present situation. Sometimes one...more
