Nice ambience. You can choose between rustic beer pub and more modern restaurant. The dishes also are different depending on the place. In the pub you find more rustic regional, cheaper food, in the restaurant dishes with a modern touch, inspired from regional, asian and mediterranian kitchen. But at both places the food is good. You can also get the beer from the local Fiege brewery there.
The restaurant and also the pub are nice made, you feel yourself good there. Sometimes the service isn't that fast but always friendly. In summer you can sit outside in the nice beergarden. The tram and bus stations are in front of the restaurant.
Favorite Dish: Last time I had grilled Manchego cheese with ham, rucola and sesame honey: wonderful. But don't expect huge portions in the restaurant! They are also not that cheap but were always great tasting. In the pub the portions are a bit bigger, a bit cheaper but I've also been in pubs where it's cheaper and you get bigger portions. Nevertheless I can recommend a visit in the Hopfengarten.

not trying a Koelsch in this region is a sin as such, of course you might not like beer, then drink wine or Sprudel...Tablewater, Gerolsteiner or Appolinaris, the Queen of Tablewater
Favorite Dish: Koelsch Bier in the tipical small Koelsch Glas
Durst wird durch Bier erst schoen = beer makes thirst beautiful, but did you know: ...it takes 7min to tap a german Beer!! now you do...never mind,

If you like Greek food the Poseidon in definively a place to go. But attention: Probably the food is too fat if you're not used to eat fat food!
The restaurant is very nice, most times the service is friendly ;-) and it's a good idea to book seats.
Favorite Dish: I love the starter plate. It's also possible to get asmall one which is not on the card, just ask for it. Also Kritaraki, a dish of small noodles looking like rice and tasting differnet than normal pasta, with mince meat and a good tomato sauce is one of my favourite dishes there - and it's not as fatty as other things there. Prices are average between € 8 and € 15.

Good Chinese food. People also come from Mönchengladbach or other cities to eat here. For my taste they put too less salt on the dishes but it's better this way than the opposite ;-)
Favorite Dish: I know it's stupid but I think I like everything the same.

A very famous restaurant in Korschenbroich where many locals go for a drink with friends or to eat "gutbürgerlich", which means simple, German food. The Schnitzels are huge, the mussels (only in autumn and winter) are great.
Favorite Dish: I love muscles provencal and of course "Muscheln Rheinische Art", a local mussel dish.

We found this great place when we were in Duisburg's Innen Hafen. The restaurant has two floors in one of old harbour buildings and they brew their own Diebels beer here and have their own bakery with always fresh bread and rolls.
Favorite Dish: I had Deftige Gulaschsuppe ("Deftige Gulaschsuppe kräftig und scharf, mit jeder Menge Fleisch, dazu ofenfrisches Brot") and Große Ofenkartoffel (mit Blattspinat, Putenbruststreifen, Chamoignons und Käse überbacken).
(They have online menu so I copied it - it was a very tasteful goulash soup and a filled / baked potato). It was delicious.

Casino is not a casino but a nice caffe and restaurant in former boiler house of Zeche Zollverein in Essen. In the interior comtemporary decoration is mixed with 6 metres high concrete piers, remains of the boiler installations and funny chandeliers and plant pots.
Favorite Dish: We had only coffee and cakes here. The restaurant itself is a bit on the pricey side, although they claim their menu has links with traditional miners food. (I'm sure it costed less in those days ;)

Sandra reserved us a place in this Turkish restaurant in center of Essen. I loved their modern interior and the fact that you actually saw cooks preparing food.
Everything looked fresh and tasted delicious, the service was great and Turkish coffee was real Turkish.
Favorite Dish: I had Turkey "sarma" which was a roll of turkey meet with vegetables in a delicious cheese sauce.

From late Spring to early Summer many Westfalian Restaraunts offer a "Spargelkarte" or Asparagus Menu ...now for fellow USAers this doesn't refer to the skinny green variety we're used to ,but a huge white version. Often served with Ham and potatoes this is a great way to experience local foods...really goes down good with a local Pils ....

The "Zum Döre Strüxke" is an old restaurant-pub, the kind of pubs where the neighbourhood meet in the evening to have a beer. It quite nice there and the service is friendly.
open daily from 5 p.m.
Sundays and on holidays "lunchtable" from 12 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sa / So / Mo "Frühschoppen" (which means a "cosy" meeting in the morning with beer ;-)
Favorite Dish: Favorite Dish:
If you like to eat simple German food it's the right place for you up from € 5 you get good meals like "Ratsherrentopf" (I really like it: meat with vegetable together in one casserole) or vegetarian food like au gratin potatoes or baked camenbert. They also serve "Kinder-" or "Seniorenteller" (plates for children or older people, which means smaller portions) for € 1,50 less.
