    HIKING, WALKING, JOGGING etc.: Stadtwald

    View of the Siebengebirge
    2 more images

The Stadtwald , the forest on the hillside above Rheinbach, contains a network of paths and trails for jogging, walking, biking and short hikes and also some separate horse-riding trails. The forest is Rheinbach's green backyard and can be reached on foot from about every part of the town.

The path along the edge of the forest offers a nice view of the plain over to the Siebengebirge , the Seven Mountains beyond the Rhine. On very clear days even the cathedral of Cologne is visible.

SCUBA DIVING: Monte Mare Indoor Diving Centre

Scuba divers in the Monte Mare

The Monte Mare swimming pool contains an indoor diving centre, a deep basin with an underwater landscape. Artificial rocks, caves, tunnels, and underwater volcanoes invite everyone from beginners to professionals (so they say on their website). Diving lessons for all levels are offered.

Passers-by can watch the divers from outside through two round windows (that's where I took the photo).

    SWIMMING: Monte Mare pool

Monte Mare swimming pool: the big slide
    3 more images

The Monte Mare at the upper end of the Freizeitpark is a big swimming pool with indoor and outdor basins, a separate sports basin, a warmer kids' pool, a long winding water slide, a huge sauna complex and a big basin for scuba diving.

Like, it seems, all the pools of the "Mare" chain (which spread like mushrooms all over Germany) the Monte Mare in Rheinbach suffers from inconveniences caused by the company's saving measures. Like: The air in the pool area is chilly, only the area around the children's basin is heated properly. The outdoor pool is meant for use all year round but the water is too cold - 28°C is not enough in winter. Little repairs aren't done - in my changing cabin, for example, the bench was broken. Since they charge quite a lot for the entrance fees this is annoying.

    Equipment: Bring swimgear and towels.

A marked hiking trail follows the route of the ancient Roman aqueduct. It begins in Nettesheim in the Eifel and ends in Cologne after 111,3 kms. About in the middle hikers will pass through Rheinbach.

Signs explain sights and locations along the trail that are connected with the Roman aqueduct, like, here, the original piece that has been put up in Rheinbach.
