CentrO Oberhausen is the showcase of "What would happen if...".
What would happen if all former industrial sites in the Ruhr area were sold to American consumer capital. Of course - a big shopping mall accompanied by a bizarre theme park and a large multiplex cinema.
Built by financial capital from the 51st State, CentrO proudly presents itself as the "Neue Mitte" - meaning the new center of Oberhausen. No doubt it is popular and crowded, no doubt it is hard to find a free parking place in one of ten big parking houses. Other city centres started to decay because of this new shopping heaven.
What to buy: If you don't mind the general feel of plain consumerism - you can probably buy anything you want, like in any American city.
If you do mind, then close your eyes, continue along the Industrial Heritage Trail, and be happy that this is only one mistake that happenned in transformation of the Ruhr region.

When we told our friends about trips to Europe , we were often asked for "some of those chocolates with rum inside" as presents ...Well you need look no farther than the local Aldi Store ...which is a chain if Supermarkets in Germany/Netherlands to find some excellent choices for souvineers/gifts...
Yes they had the Chocolates ...at a great price-(seem to remember about 2 Euro for a nice box)...and one can find lots of goodies to use as gifts in these stores ...German Mustard -"Senf" made a good choice for some friends...candy for any children on the list can be a bargain as well,or a can or two of that renowned Deutsche Bier will make it back to the USA ...beyond gift shopping Deutsche Grocery stores have nice prices on everyday items such as Brotchen,Yoghurt and fresh fruits...We recommend a stop at the local Grocery store as a part of any trip abroad...
