    Markt – The maibaum

by Jerelis Written Oct 18, 2011
    The maibaum of Tecklenburg.

During our trip back into the Middle Ages at the Markt we had something to drink at Café Zur Schlosssträsse. A nice place to take a break and after that we continued the walk over the Markt. We went straight towards the fountain and right from that point we had a good view at the Renaissance Rathaus (Town Hall). At that time we were about finished with our "Markt tour", but still we had to see the maypole which is situated right in the middle of the square. A maypole is a tall wooden pole erected as a part of the local folk festival. In this case the maypole is a permanent feature that is only utilized during the festival. It’s fun to watch and the colourful flags give a cheerful atmosphere to the square.

And finally we learned that there are guided tours of Tecklenburg (mostly from April to October) with themes such as Night Watchman tours, Robber Baron tours, Ghost Tours, and one that takes the “Witches Path” filled with all sorts of myths, legends, and caves. Only one conclusion remains for this medieval square ---> Do visit!

When we stood at the Markt we just didn't say anything and watched all around. The Markt is the heart of Tecklenburg and has an almost unbelievable romantic composition of half-timbered, colour washed houses with steep roofs and gables, perfectly preserved. It truly radiates the glory and warmth of its 400 years of history in an impressive way.

We did walk around over the square a bit and we had a good look at the 400 year old half-timbered houses, the Renaissance Town Hall and the fountain. We read in the brochure the following about it; "It mirrors the living poetry of the Middle Ages" and we couldn't have described it in a better way! But anyway, the Markt is the natural centre of Tecklenburg: a stage for various minor and major events, a reference point, a meeting place and the starting point or destination for walkers who want to discover the village and the Teutoburger Wald National Park. Historically speaking, the square began to operate in a shape and size similar to what we see today in the early years of the17th century.

We can honestly say that the village of Tecklenburg is one highly recommended stop along the way. To get there, follow the curves of the Autobahn E37 and take the exit to the L504 road called the Tecklenburg Strasse. It's a very important vacation destination, definitely a complete tourist trap. So why stop there? Well, it's a mecca for those who are interested in picturesque half-timbered houses.

So don't get here whenever you want to enjoy the quiet charms of the region. Try to ignore the masses of people and do admire its historical magnificence. To do so you don't need to search too long, just walk your way up the Markt (Market Square), which we consider to be the perfect example of German town architecture and therefore is one of the classic tourist destination of the entire region. On our way towards the medieval marktplatz we already spotted some fine examples of half-timbered houses. But at the square itself we were amazed by the many well preserved half-timbered houses. Wauw!
