Aachen: The West Tip of Germany

by hquittner

Aachen is a bustling city with successful industry and a large technical university. It is a main rail and roadway access to Germany from England, Holland and Belgium, and sits very near (4km away) the "Dreilandespunt" (elevation 321m) thehighest point in Holland where the German, Dutch and Belgian borders meet. The old city is compact , easily walked, and made attractive by a large number of bewitching modern bronze statuary fountains in many modest squares. There are plenty of restaurants too.

Gemuend: A Base of Operations

by hquittner

This is a small city that is not a tourist stop except when it is acting as one oe the 3 gateways into the Eifel National Park. The terrain is hilly farmland and low forested mountains. People come and stay here for hiking and biking and for relaxation The town is administrative a conjoined entity called Schleiden-Gemuend. It is loaded with trails and maps are available from the park and hiking clubs. It appears in our travels because we used it as a base of operations for over a week of day trips in the Eifel area from Aachen and Koeln down to the Mosel Valley. (See our Gemuend pages for our reasons for this decision).

Monschau: Walk the Town

by hquittner

Part of the Eifel is in this Land and Monschau is in it. When we decided to stay for 2 weeks in Gemuend, we found that it was very near (about 30km). We had never heard of it. After reading about it we were curious. It was a good find. Monschau calls for slow savoring but a quick traversal or a "part-of-a-day" stopover is better than missing it (see our Introduction and Tips). No major highways come near the town. The last 20-40 km is backroads of good quality. This could be called " off the beaten path".

Bad Münstereifel

by robertgaz

Bad Münstereifel is a medium sized medieval town in the Eifel region of Germany and is famous for it’s 15th century city fortifications. They originally circumscribed the entire town in the middle ages times but now only some sections still remain standing .You can walk amongst these ancient fortification and get a great view of Bad Münstereifel from the top of this ancient wall.

Monschau

by robertgaz

Monschau has remarkably well preserved houses that are centuries old and the town is surrounded by a peaceful, hilly landscape. Some of the houses are half timbered and brightly coloured with high slate roofs.

Tip Photo
Heimbach

by robertgaz

The peaceful village of Heimbach is a great starting point for the many beautiful walks through the Eifel National Park around here. You can take a stroll to see the ruins of an ancient castle on top of the hill overlooking the town and river.A visit to the nearby Mariawald Kloster is also worthwhile. This is a Catholic Abbey famous for it's herbal liquer that can be purchased at the gift shop.

Dortmund

by diocletianvs

Unlike other cities in the Ruhr area when you arrive to Dortmund you suddenly feel that there was something here even before the boom caused by industrial revolution. This once Hanseatic town was encircled by city walls in 13th Century and this is where the inner ring road now stands. While it lacks pompousness of the Vienna's ring, and although Dortmund was also heavily damaged in WWII bombings the city center still has traces of the old charm and doesn't show the usual image of the 1960s shopping pedestrian streets that we find everywhere else in the region. The center is compact and dominated by four churches that survived the bombings. Dortmund's main attractions include beer and football - town got brewing rights in 1293 and produces six millions hectolitres of beer annually while Borussia Dortmund is one of the symbols of the city and one of city's best financial companies. We did...

Gasometer Oberhausen

by diocletianvs

Gasometer is proudly presented in tourist books as "The largest exhibition hall in Europe". This 117 metres high gas tank was built in 1929 to store blast furnace gas from the nearby steelworks and when it was closed in 1988 demolition costs were estimated to one million Euros. It was bought by IBA Emscher Park company for the same amount of money, not demolished but reconstructed into an exclusive art installation gallery. After a TV program presentation half a million visitors were attracted to its grand opening in 1994 and soon the Gasometer became nationally known attraction and one of the best known symbols of the Ruhrgebiet. There is usually one major exhibition per year, and those included installations by Christo and Jeanne-Claude (who put 13,000 coloured oil barrels inside) as well as the whole gas baloon that was on display here last year. When there is no exhibition you can't...

Aquarius Wassermuseum, Mülheim an der Ruhr

by diocletianvs

Large water tank in Mülheim was built in 1892 by August Thyssen in order to provide the nearby ironworks with water. The water tower was closed down in 1982, and thanks to the fact that it was registered as a historical monument it was preserved. Today this old beauty is the home of the Aquarius Water Museum - a multi-media attraction devoted to water. At the entrance you get a chip-card and the journey to the Waterworld starts in the water tank on the top. The view from the glass gallery is great, and if you know German I'm sure that you can learn a lot from the multimedia presentations on 14 levels of the Water tower. They are all devoted to importance of water, the environment and water protection, and consist of numerous films, computer simulations and games - there's even a quiz game and you can print out your results at the exit of the museum. Entrance costs 3 Eur (May 2005),...

Galerie Architektur und Arbeit GAAG, Gelsenkirchen

by diocletianvs

The concrete - glass cubus of the Galerie Architektur und Arbeit in Gelsenkirchen was built in the courtyard next to one of the old winding towers that served extensive network of underground mine galleries. Close to the winding tower there is a beautiful art nouveau machinery building, that was built in 1908. Both the winding tower and the machinery building were preserved and in 1994 a new concrete - glass cubus was added, designed by architects Herbert Pfeiffer and Christoph Ellermann. The cubus is now the seat of the Galerie Architektur und Arbeit where occasional meetings, workshops, advanced trainings as well as exhibitions are held. The modern building is linked with the old machinery hall that is turned into a large exhibition hall, still displaying original art nouveau decorations and industrial ceiling installations. When we were here there was an exhibition of architectural...
