Markt, Unna

Rahlenbeckscher Hof

Rahlenbeckscher Hof, Unna

yumyum Says:  This impressive half-timbered building seems to be the only one left in the inner city of the local nobility. It was built in the 17th century on middle aged fundaments. It's named after a owner's family from the 19th century.

Last night watchman

Last night watchman, Unna

yumyum Says:  A statue of Unna's last night watchman, Friedrich-Wilhelm Werbinsky (1822-1905) can be found on the fassade of a building constructed in 1904. Since 1929 there is an inn there. The statue is also from 1904.

Former ale house

Former ale house, Unna

yumyum Says:  The former ale house "Felskeller-Braeu" was given up at the end of the 19th century with the industralisation of brewing. The tavern "Morgentor" next door was built in 1723 on an old foundation, first as living quarters. From 1824 it was a tavern with a brewery behind it.

Eulenturm

Eulenturm, Unna

yumyum Says:  The Eulenturm (tower) is a left-over of a defense tower from the middle ages. It was built in 1475, but in 1856 half of it was removed. Through a false translation from the low German language the tower original name Oelkenturm was turned into Eulenturm.

Catholic church St. Katarina

Catholic church St. Katarina, Unna

yumyum Says:  On the spot of today's St. Katarina church was a church built in 1848, but it became too small. So in 1933/34 the current church was built. The interior of the church looks very unusual. Before the reformation the congregation used the now evangelic city church.

The Brasserie Sahi is prominently located on the Market Square. It's kind of a French style brasserie with photos from France but the music was very American with Elvis and the like.

We had drinks and a snack each. I opted for the Toast Hawaii which turned out to be more salad and toast but still it was nice at Euro 3.50. My friend had Bruschettas (Euro 3.00) and apparently they were delicious. Service was prompt and friendly.

You can have tea in the glass from a tea bag or a pot of tea made with tea leaves.

train at Unna station

Unna is easily reached by local train from Dortmund. Since it's a small city only regional trains stop here. At the station there is a big kiosk. The railway station is convieniently located. A short walk takes you to the sights.

Just a few meters from the station there is the Rathaus where during the week you will find the tourist information, but not on weekends. By the Rathaus there is a information table with a map on it.

Favorite thing: There are a fair few really neat half-timbered houses (Fachwerkhaeuser) in Unna. On the first picture you can see my favourite one.
