Approaching Hammerstein by sandysmith Hammerstein is a relatively new station - opened in August 2001. Its just after the Sonnborner station and passes the Sonnborner busy road junction which was built in the 1970's. It was Europe's biggest junction with its 14 roads, railway bridge and pylons of the Schwebebahn

Landgericht Station by sandysmith We spent several minutes on the Landgericht station admiring its charm and views of the bridges over the River Wupper. With trains running ever couple of minutes or so it was no problem to let a few trains go past and take some pics before getting another one.

Sonnbonner area by sandysmith Sonnborner Station is one of the 4 that travels overland and over one of the busiest shopping areas too -especially when street market is on! The track is squeezed into a tight space and you can almost peer through the windows of the buildings as you pass by! Don't think I'd live to live in one of those buildings :-S

train drivers view by sandysmith In the construction of the suspended railway a total of 19,200 tons of iron were used and includes 472 supporting iron trestles and bridges - quite an engineering feat!. Here's a view through the engine window of some of the ironwork. The train driver was kind enough to open the window betweeb his cab and the passenger coach for me - what a kind man!

suspended above the river by sandysmith The western terminal of the 8.3 mile length of the track is Vohwinkel - one of 4 overland stations. The easternmost station is Oberbarmen and it takes about 30 minutes to ride the length. The 20 stationsx are a mix of modern (glass) and old styles (art nouveay). We parked the car near Westende station, one of the modern ones and rode sections in either direction but not the complete route.

monorail by sandysmith Construction on the Schwebebahn began in 1898 with its official opening in summer of 1901. The last section was opened to the public in 1903. In the 1970's the carriages were replaced with modern ones - all except for the Kaiser carriage which is used on special occassions - unfortunately we did not see this one.

Oranament by belgianchocolate Wuppertal used to be a really prosperous city. Around the year 1900 a lot of building works where going on... The houses build in that time are witnesses of a rich period. In whole Wuppertal you can find great houses except in the pedestrian center in the middle of town. We found this beautifull ornament in the Haarlhausstrasse. Witch is a side street of the Friedrich-ebert strasse. The houses where build in 1897 and the style is rather ecclectic... Over the river by sabsi After the four overland stops you will reach the river Wupper and follow it from here. I was pretty impressed by the turns the train takes: It swings as if you are in a rollercoaster! A bit scary at first but I got used to it! Unlike a young elephant called "Tuffi". He was on a promotion trip by Schwebebahn for "his" circus in 1950. He jumped off the train into the river. He survived with only a few scratches! Leave a Comment

Overland Track by sabsi On the western end of the suspension railway there's four overland stations (unlike all others which are located over the river Wupper). The streets the train goes through are amazing. If you live on the 1st floor people on the train can stare into your windows on their way to work. We parked our car for free directly at the western terminal "Vohwinkel and took the train from here to see all parts of the suspension railway. Leave a Comment Directions: Overland Stops are Vohwinkel, Bruch, Hammerstein and Sonnborner StraßeWebsite: www.schwebebahn.de

Wuppertaler Schwebebahn by sabsi THE thing to do in Wuppertal which you won't be able to experience ANYWHERE else in the world (I guess ;) is a trip on the suspension railway - Wuppertaler Schwebebahn. The train is hanging from tracks above shopping streets and the river Wupper. A wonderful way to see the whole (very long) city of Wuppertal. What we did was to buy a day ticket for 5 people so we had the chance to get off the train whenever we liked a station. The trip from one end to the other takes approx. 30 minutes. Trains go at a speed of approx. 50 kph. Leave a Comment
