Lets go to the Jahrmarkt!! by mtncorg Since I was too busy sampling wines of the Nahe Valley, I don't have any pictures of the Jahrmarkt festival grounds itself. The Jahrmarkt is a big fest, complete with rides and amusements, that takes place the thrid week of August. It dates from much earlier times. There is a large tent - the type you find at the Oktoberfest, one that can hold a thousand people - which is filled with people sampling the wines of a dozen or so local vinters. The picture is of a German friend smiling at the prospect of going to that night's edition of the Jahrmarkt. Just above the bridgehouses, you can barely make out the large ferris wheel at the festgrounds. Leave a Comment

I guess we all agree on this on; there is nothing more exciting than going travelling - exploring another country, experiencing a different culture, travelling around in new ways, sampling the local cuisine and chatting to the local people for a different perspective on life. However during our travels we learned that there is one certain thing that you should be aware of and prepared for to make sure that the trip is as easy and enjoyable as possible. We always try to see everything once we're there, but this is not always an act of responsible travelling. We always talk to the locals and we know that they have the information about just the right spots to visit and how to undertake them. It will not only enhance your experiences but also avoid any unnecessary hassles. For us the travel tips we have written in this section made the most of our travel experience and we came home in the same happy, healthy state that we left. Leave a Comment

Radon solarium beneath the Tea House by mtncorg There are lots of places to spend time in Bad Kreuznach (and in nearby Bad Muenster am Stein/Ebernburg) while enjoying a typical German Kur. It however seems to be a dying tradition as it becomes harder and harder for people to get someone else to pay for their Kur. It is a shame as the Kur employs a lot of people in towns where employment is hard to find. Here, along the Nahe, Kurs center around the large salinenthals but other options exist too. One such is the Radon Solarium. In caves beneath the Tea House on the north bank of the Nahe, people pay to expose themselves to low doses of radon radiation - lower than Chernobyl, for example - in the hope of a therapeutic result. The caves resulted from old mercury/quicksilver mines. Leave a Comment

Relief showing 'ancient' water jousting on Nahe by mtncorg This is a fairly recent fest for Bad Kreuznach - maybe in the last 20 years. People get out on the water in little boats and try to joust one another into the water, similar to a festival in Mainz, I think. Also like the nearby Rhineland-Pfalz capital city, Bad Kreuznach has a parade on Rosenmontag complete with floats with young women pouring free wine to an adoring crowd - you gotta bring your own glass! Some of the crowd really get into this parade as they chase their favorite float down the street throwing back each offering with one big gulp - all the better to get ready for the next float!
