the river Mosel from Bistro Brchen

Baerchen Bistro is my favorite restaurant in Bernkastel-Kues, as it has such a great terrace facing the Mosel river and it offers great meals at reasonable prices.

Favorite Dish: We had 2x pike-perch
4 glasses of great Mosel wine
and 2 Bernkasteler Kaffee for desert (similar to Irish-coffee)
and payed a total of 39 Euros

Cafe Konditorei Hansen: Cafe Konditorei Hansen

    Cafe Hansen

Another one of my favorite restaurants is Cafe Hansen on main square, close to the old town-hall.

Favorite Dish: You may get great cakes there and also "Bernkasteler Kaffee" - rather similar to Irish Coffee, but prepared with brandy from Bernkastel.
BUT I have to admit, I personally prefer "Ruedesheimer Kaffee" , made of Asbach Uralt, with a thick top of whipped cream and some chocolate chips on top.

    Restaurant "Bruecken-Schenke" Traben-Trarbach: Restaurant "Bruecken-Schenke" Traben-Trarbach

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Traben-Trarbach is in a short hiking-distance, when you walk or bike through the vinyards.
When you go there by car the distance is a lot longer.

Favorite Dish: This great restaurant was built inside an old tower-gate, that you have to go through when driving from Koblenz to Bernkastel-Kues.
They are open daily from 11.00 a.m.

    Ratskeller in Bernkastel

    Ratskeller Restaurant

RATSKELLER - this is a name for a restaurant that you will find in many towns all over Germany and mostly it is a really great place to eat and "breath great architecture" below the townhall.
Most of these places used the vaults of the townhall-cellars for a restaurant, where the councillors of the city could go for a quick snack or glass of wine, while they should rather work....
RAT is the german word for councillor.
Ratte is the german word for the rat, that you might have thought of...

....but there are also certainly lots of rats inside every Rathaus , some even with just 2 feet :-)

Favorite Dish: Try Rheinischer Sauerbraten and the local wine

The restaurant inside the castle Landhut is a great place to have lunch on a big terrace overlooking the Mosel-valley.
They are open daily except on Tuesday and the kitchen is open all day.

Favorite Dish: They even have this small window, seen on my picture for a group of 4 people and a great view.

It's quite an experience to enter the Café Hansen. Everything that you can image in chocalte is in fact overthere in chocolate.

Just enjoy it as a late breakfast or an early lunch, called a brunch.

    Favorite Dish: Kiwi-cake is amazing

    Doctor-Weinstube

The place, where the prince came into life again, after he was drinking the famous "Doctor-wine" is a restaurant and hotel today.
On a side-entrance of the building you may read the story of the prince and his healing and you may right away try the wine yourself and find out, whether it will work for you , too !

Favorite Dish: Take some of the best local medicine...
    drink the Doctor-wine !!!

    St Michael: Let's eat cake!

by ATLC Updated Apr 4, 2011

    Moselweintorte (Mosel wine cake)

I lost the bill and remember only slightly that it was St. Michael's tearoom.
Germany is known for its 'Kuchen' (cake) which are really cakes with lovely toppings and always fresh. Not being used to the cake-eating tradition, for me it's one of the attraction of visiting Germany (or Austria for that matter :-)

Favorite Dish: Moselweintorte. A nice slice with a pot of tea. I did taste a faint whiff of alcohol in this cake but it was good, fresh and covered with a thin layer of cream, marzipan and chocolate. Yummy!

This restaurant is a very lovely location with a wonderful porch, some Rock'n Roll interieur, and the scent of good ol' days. Not too sure what exactly the scent of good ol' days might be like yet the restaurant does smell nice and has a very cosy atmosphere. They also do every first and third Saturday of each month a smoking-free dance event. The best to me was their coffee latte, so creamy, so tasty, so milky yet rich on coffee.

    Restaurant Poseidon: Greek lunch

    by Maria250 Updated Aug 26, 2011

    Restaurant Poseidon

We made it there by already noonish and there for had that place almost for ourselves. Very quiet, very nice, very friendly place. I loved the blue fisher's boat outside at the restaurant's entry, on the sidewalk. It made me thinking of some lovely vacation in Crete years back. Generally some nice interieur there at Restaurant Poseidon. Food was not that fancy but very ok. We had chicken soup, tomato salad, gyros tzaziki, snails with garlic, coke, coffee, mineral water. It was a good non-wine-Mosel river-related lunch.

Kartoffelhaus Jaqueminshof: Don't miss the Goose leg in November

This is a very good restaurant run by a couple. He is the chef and comes out to greet you and to see how your meal is going. We started with a chestnut soup that was out of this world, it had a hint of sherry in it and it was creamy, spectaculat! Then I had venison stew with knoedel dumplings with a horseradish cream and a side of homemade chunky apple sauce. Jeff had a perfectly cooked goose (in season) leg with roasted chestnuts in a sweet jus sauce and perfect brussel sprouts.

Favorite Dish: The Roast goose leg and the chestnut soup. I am sure that this is a seasonal menu:) The chef is very good during any season I am sure. The soup was 3.80, my veal stew 10.80, goose 14.50, 1 Pils 2.20, glass wine 2.60.

    The Restaurant
    1 more image

You can tell this is a favorite for the locals. We were just lucky tourists to find it. The service was awesome and the food came quick and hot. It was one of the best schnitzel we have ever had. And the best potato salad I have ever had and I've had alot. Ihad the Klein Schnitzel with potato salad for 6.50 and Jeff had a schnitzel with fries and a nice salad for 7.60.

The restaurant is small, seats about 25 people, 2 large tables, the rest 4 tops. It's really homey and very casual unlike alot of stuffy looking places that we saw.

Favorite Dish: Schnitzel and potato salad.

    Cafe/Restaurant Burgruine Landshut: Dizzy...dizzy

When we did that hike towards Cafe/Restaurant Burgruine Landshut, we by then didn't know that this beautiful ruin houses such a very nice outdoor cafe & restaurant. Since it was very crowded we yet spared the coffee but climbed up the tower above the cafe. Gee..to me that was really, really scary! But with my buddy's help, I eventually too made it up there. And once leaving your fear of height, and the dizzy that comes with it, behind you, you will be rewarded with a most amazing view.

    Don´t remeber name..: Delicious cheesecake

We only stopped for couple of hours, and went to a cafe in the old town squere.it was on your right side, when coming from river, and had whole wall open to squere. It didn´t look like those traditional little German cafes, but when I saw same kind of cheese-cake,that I ate first time in my life in Germany,at age of 18,I had to have it.It was as good as I remembered, and it was nice to sit outside and watch the people. This was also cheaper than those traditional cafes we had seen-and witch I usually prefer.

Favorite Dish: Baked cheese-cake,and a cafe au lait.My husband took a chokolade-cake,and it was good, too. And big slices.
