We climbed to Kapuzinerberg (see Things to do Tips) from Endertstrasse and we came down the Kapuzinertreppe (stairs) on the other side. The sun was shining and you could feel the warmth of the stones. Halfway a man was busy with a broom. He commented that autumn was early this year. Many leaves had already fallen. We wished each other 'Schönen Tag'.

    Walk towards the castle

Here are some images of what you see while you walk to the castle. Or rather: climb to the castle.
When you start the climb, you hopefully look up and discover that it doesn't look far away (photo 1). It doesn't, does it? But it'll take you another 15 minutes (heave heave!) to reach there. Then you come across a chapel called Rochuskapelle (photo 2). In 1422 there was an archbishop that kept the city of Cochem free of certain taxes. And so the first chapel was built. It was later rebuilt by a landlord (photo 3). After the chapel (as I also say in my transportation tip), you will find yourself descending. Not a hopeful sign because you know you still have to go up a long way. You'll find a little tiny chapel with a Maria in it, and a request to support the restoration of it (photo 4). Then the final haul comes of easy but steep steps. And when you're nearly there, you look to your right and see the castle (photo 5). You'll have rounded almost the whole hill before coming this far!

Very busy little streets and also the Marktplatz was crowded with people. Nice houses all around, very uninteresting shops though. The fountain is of 1767 and in my Mosel guide I read that the Marktplatz is the first address to go to. But really, I thought it was so busy I was out of there in a flash!

Burg Eltz - 40km east of
    Cochem
    by globetrott
Burg Eltz is one of the most beautiful castles in Germany and it is situated about 40km east of Cochem.
Burg Eltz is one of the very few castles in Germany that is in the posession of the same family for more than 800 years now. The castle was built on top of a rock , that is almost totally surrounded by a small river.

Only a small road leads to the castle, where a draw-bridge was used to defend it in medieval times.
The castle-courts may be visited freely, only for a tour through the ancient living-rooms of the " Edlen Herren von Burg Eltz" with plenty of works of art and great furniture, you have to pay a fee of 6 Euros for the guided tour.

Kröv / Kroev is a lovely village in the Mosel-valley, that nobody - including me - would mention If there would not be a very special , great wine ! It tastes simply great, despite it's strange name :

Nacktarsch - it will not be possible to translate this name into English, without parts beeing automatically removed...

n@cked @ss is the name in English and of course it is a registered wine-trademark and may be used ONLY by vinters in Kröv !!
You may click on my link below, when you like to read about where the funny name came from and also like to see the famous label of the wine-bottle.

Ediger-Eller is another lovely village about 25km upstream from Cochem. You will drive through that village on your way to Bernkastel-Kues and I think it is well worth a short stop-over. Already from the street you pass through you will see several beautiful halftimbered houses and plenty of places, where you may sit in a garden-restaurant and taste the famous local Mosel-wines.
All of these small villages are not yet overrun by tourists like Cochem and Bernkastel.

Burg Bischofstein is a nice castle high above the left bank of the river Mosel / Moselle, about 25km downstream from Cochem.
The castle dates back to the 13th century and was rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century by a rich banker from Darmstadt. Today it is in private posession and may not be visited. It belongs to The "Fichte Gymnasium" , a school in Krefeld and is used by the pupils on a regular basis.

    Take a walk over the
    Mosel-bridge
    by globetrott
Take a walk over the Mosel-bridge and you will get the best view of the castle and the town of Cochem. That bridge is also a perfect place to watch the cruiseships and cargoships passing by.
Bridges over the river Mosel / Moselle are quite rare and so you have to make up your mind about the road you like to take, otherwise you loose a lot of time, searching for one of the very few carferries, most of them may take a few cars only and you might loose a lot of time that way...

    Winneburg
    by globetrott
The Ruine Winneburg / castle ruins Winneburg are about 10km north of Cochem, in the small side-valley, where you may also take the chairlift.
There is no direct road to the old castle ruins, so you might need almost the whole day to walk there from Cochem.
One day, when I return to Cochem , I will certainly try to get there as well.
There seems to be not even a restaurant there, but it looks nice from the distance.

    upstream from Cochem
    by globetrott
Traben-Trarbach is a small town with an interesting architecture, about 45km upstream from Cochem.
On my picture you may see "Brückentor" a gate built over the Mosel-bridge. On 1st floor you will find a restaurant called "Brücken-Schenke" with a perfect view on the river Mosel / Moselle and also the cars passing by underneath.
This restaurant is open daily from 11.00a.m.
