One of the high quality white wines from the Ahr, which were increasingly cultivated over recent years is the white Burgunder. Original main cultivation areas of the white Burgunder, the Pinot blanc, and its most important variant the Chardonnay, is France where one can regard it as the French Riesling. It is developed from mutation of the grey Burgunder. The wines distinguish ithemselves by a discreet bouquet, neutral taste and sparkling acid. It is specially suitable for dry vine. (Synonyms: in France it is called Pinot blanc or Pinot Chardonnay, in Italy Pinot bianca)

The region of the Ahr is known for its blue Spaetburgunder which ranks among the noblest of the red wines. The wines are full-bodied, with a fine flavour reminding of bitter almond. From the blue Spaetburgunder some of the best red wines in the world are produced.

One of the attractions of Dernau is visible on the hill above the town - the Krausberg. the tower was build in 1927 and on a clear day the cities of Bonn and Cologne are visible. 1944 the tower was destroyed as a strategic point and the rebuilding in 1950 stopped at a height of 6 meters.

The Red Wine Hiking Trail starts in the town of Altenahr with the hike up to the Castle Are. From there one simply follows the sign posted trail that continues for 35 km to the town of Bad Bodendorf. The trail moves through the various wine estates and at times also passes through shady forests.
En-route one can always retrun to the valley below and return to the starting point by rail.
I did this trail on a Sunady during the harvest season and was delighted to find lots of wine stalls that offered samples of the wines of the region.
