Travelling with (young) kids.
Are you nervous about taking your baby or child on a plane trip? You aren't alone, most parents are nervous about it. We have moved with the kids to Alkmaar by car this holiday and drove some distances by car on when we were there and we learned a few things that hopefully will help you.
Bring books, old favourite toys and new surprise toys. Do remember that balls are not a good idea as they can end up anywhere! Our best buys were definitely books, especially sticker books are great! They can peel the stickers off, are glossy, have thick pages to turn easy, have bright colours and come in endless subjects. They're a nice break from the other books your child might be tired of, too. Put aside fears of setting poor eating habits, and bring on the snacks! We told Iris: “Welcome to the world of boredom eating."
Toy bars meant for stroller use are a big help in the car, as they often feature toys plus a snack cup, and are big and easy for you to grab from the front seat for refills. During the car trip it’s always a good idea to play a game and sing some songs. It sounds rather easy, but it does work!
We only have one last statement! Just do it! Don’t be afraid that it might go wrong. We have learned this, because we have been travelling with Iris from the beginning. She was only 6 weeks young when we had our first short vacation and stayed in a hotel. Iris has been used to it rather fast and (maybe because of it) has always been an easy kid to get along with.

How to reach Idar-Oberstein
Idar-Oberstein is in easy reach from the major centres like Saarbrücken (Saarland), Frankfurt/Main, Koblenz and Köln (Cologne).
Although no motorway/expressway leads to Idar-Oberstein, it is maximum 50 km away from the surrounding motorways:
A61 from Ludwigshafen – Alzey – Bingen – Koblenz – Köln: exit at Rheinböllen and drive on B41/B421 approx. 60 km southwest;
A1 from Saarbrücken – Trier (almost) – Köln: exit at Wittlich and drive on B50 approx. 50 km southeast;
A6 (E50, A4 in France)/A62 from Mannheim via Kaiserslautern to Saarbrücken and further on to Metz in France: exit A62 near Nohfelden and drive northeast on L176/L169 approx. 25 km.
Idar-Oberstein has a train station and is connected to Frankfurt/Main every 2 hours: travel time is 1 hour, 40 minutes, price (April 2012: 24,20 Euro). From Mainz and Saarbrücken it is even a regional train every half hour: travel time is 1 hour, 10 minutes, prices based on the regional network price chart.

Frankfurt-Hahn Airport is located only 40 km north of Idar-Oberstein and has quite a convenient bus service to Idar-Oberstein: Monday to Friday at 10:25, 17:30, 18:35 and 20:35, Saturdays 9:50 and 14:25 and Sundays 14:25 and 17:45. Travel time is approx. 50 minutes, busses leave from platform 4 outside of the terminal (bus line no. 351).

The regional bus and train network RNN (Rhein-Nahe Netz) has a huge network stretching from Saarbrücken to Mainz and Wiesbaden. Along Nahe river it is mostly by regional trains and into the side valleys it is bus. Additional bus lines see => here, and also on the map of Idar-Oberstein and surroundings for download.
