Responding to the post about the ladies of the night street near Kaiserslautern dubbed "40 Mark Strassa". When I was a kid living on Ramstein Air Force base back in the 70's the same street was referred to as 20 Mark Strassa. Years later I was sitting around a beach fire in Pebble Beach California talking to a couple of army grunts that had just returned from that area and I asked them if "20 Mark Strassa" was still there? One of them looked at me with a puzzled look and replied "do you mean 60 mark strassa"? Times are a changen. Back in the 70's there was a band of gypsies that camped out in trailers right in that same area and it was known that after dark you did not want to run across them.
Thugs late at night
Avoid the ATM by Burger King and the Markthalle after the Markthalle closes. When the club closes and the Polizei head off to other places small groups have been known to harass people in this area and even rob a couple.
Girls of the night (and day)
The road from Volgelway (sp) to K-Town is dotted with little turnouts and a girl in each one. These girls are not waiting for a bus as I use to tell my kids but are working girls. They range in age from 18 to 100 and are from all walks of life. Each has a health card and each is required to visit the doctor once a month. The road they are on use to have a nickname, 40-mark strasse.

Ladies of the evening
I don't know if it is still true but when my sister was there in the 80's and the army had a large presence, Females had to be careful what side of the street they walked on at night. SHe was propositioned one evening because as she found out later she was on the side of the street frequented by ladies of the evening. And it was early evening. She didn't have a problem but it was nice to be told.
