Burg Eltz makes a perfect daytrip from Koblenz, maybe in combination with Muenster-Maifeld and Ediger Eller. Burg Eltz is one of the very few castles in Germany that is owned by the same family for already much more than 800 years now. The castle was built on an absulutely perfect place for strategic reasons, on top of a steep rock , that is almost totally surrounded by a small river and only a narrow path that was easy to defend is leading to the castle-entrance.
A draw-bridge was used to defend it in medieval times. The eldest part of the castle dates back to the 12th century, and more and more "modern" parts were added in the later centuries step by step, and so the castle as it looks today is more like a mosaique of different architectural styles.
The castle-courts may be visited freely, but for a tour through the ancient living-rooms of the " Edlen Herren von Burg Eltz" with plenty of works of art and great furniture, you have to pay a fee of 6 Euros .
NO photograpy is allowed during the guided tour !!
Parking your car is 1,50 Euros for the whole day
read more about it on my Eltz-page !

Burg Eltz Castle is one of the best preserved castles in all of Germany. Begun in the 1100s, it was built in stages for over 500 years. The family that built the castle still owns this magnificent residence. Tours are available from April to November and cost around US$7
We ended up on a German-language tour... lucky for us, the guide gave us an abbreviated English explanation after the in-depth German monologue at each stop.
There are a gift shop and two restaurants in the castle.
A stop at Burg Eltz is a must when driving from Koblenz up the Mosel to Cochem or Trier.
