the schaengel (little john) is a symbol of koblenz. since koblenz was conquered so many times in it's history there were many children fathered by invading troops. the male offspring of these relationships were called "little johns". this statue represents the people of koblenz's disregard of foreign authority. see my warning and dangers tip on a amusing story about this statue.

Schaengel / Schaengelchen is the name of this little boy, that you may see standing on a fountain, spitting water at everbody, coming too close or at the wrong time...
The expression dates back to the time, when Koblenz belonged to France ( 1794-1814), when plenty of boys got the name JEAN, but the local people could not pronounce it correctely and called them SCHANG.
Nowadays Schaengelchen is a must, when visiting Koblenz and no tourguide will ever skip it. Simply watch it from a distance before you get any closer, or take a look at the pavement and see, where it is wet, so you will not stand at the wrong place, when Schaengel spits again...

Das Schängelchen -- or "The Spitting Boy" is the name of a fountain near the City Hall (Rathaus). When we first approached, we noticed the ground was wet in front of him, but we weren't sure why. Soon a few other tourists approached... as they snapped a photo, the fountain decided to spit -- right on them. We had a good chuckle then wisely avoided his periodic spraying.
