Golden Harp: It's not bad - it's just not Irish

by Airpunk Written Feb 19, 2014

Right in the central station building you will find this Irish pub. The place is not just bad and I would prfer it over manz pubs, but except for some decoration and the name, there are few things you can call Irish in here. If you know the "Quinn's" chain - believe me that Quinn's is more Irish than the Golden Harp in Mainz. The interior is dominated by squared tables you would rather expect in a coffeehouse or mid-class restaurant. Has more of a sterile look than the old wooden furniture you would like to ecpect. Even the sports you see on various screens is German! Bundesliga instead of Premier League in an Irish Pub!  we are in plastic paddy land here.

Drinks and prices are typical for a German Irish pub - Guinness, Kilkenny, cider and lagers for beer, some whiskeys as well as a handful of spirits for the harder stuff. At least, they are doing some serious efforts to give this place a soul through karaoke, live music and pub quizzes. Unique for an Irish Pub: German crime series on TV every Sunday evening.

If you expect an Irish pub, you will be disappointed. Alternatives are the Porter House (around five minutes away). In late February 2014, the Irish Rover is expected to open just around the corner. If you are looking to have a pint, watch German football or see some live Music, the place is not bad and surely better than some German pubs.

Porter House: Best Irish Pub in town

by Airpunk Written Jan 24, 2014

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

In my opinion, the best Irish Pub in Mainz and also the one where you are more likely to find expats and students. Good quiz nights (Tuesday and Thursday) and sports on the telly, good atmosphere as well. No Irish/British food, but you can order meals from the neighbouring Italian restaurant in the Porter House where they are served. There is an outside seating are open in summertime. Selection of beers however is limited as with most Irish pubs in the region: One brand of cider, Guinness, Kilkenny and German lagers – no real ale.
From Monday to Thursdays, all pints are only 3,50 EUR from 5 pm to 7 pm (as of early 2014). There are also some other offers on several days, check their website for more details.

    Café Extrablatt

    by Kristina1701 Updated Apr 4, 2011

This "café" is located at the market place, opposite the cathedral. In summer you can also sit outsides. Compared to other pubs/bars this is a rather quiet place but still it's usually packed with people.
They now run a second café in Mainz, located at Schillerplatz! While the old one has a bistro style, the new one has more of a lounge style.

    Sausalitos: Cantina y bar mexicano

This really cool Mexican restaurant and bar, located in the city centre of Mainz, is opened daily from 5pm onwards. They have Happy Hour from 5-8pm (50% off of all cocktails and margaritas) and Margarita Hour from 11pm onwards. The age group is about 20-35 I'd say.
For pictures, their menu and so on have a look at their homepage!

    The Porter House: Irish Pub

The place where all the homesick Britsh, Americans etc. go to have a few drinks and to watch football ;-)
They offer weekly events like quizz and sports nights but unfortunately they don't serve any food (however, they also have a burger night at the moment). You can sit both insides as well as outsides.

This restaurant and café is located next to the Gutenberg Museum and besides drinks also offers a nice selection of dishes. It's a rather small place but still has a nice atmosphere.
On Wednesdays it is "cocktail night" which means that all cocktails only cost € 4.50 instead of € 8 or more.

  • Porter House Irish Pub: Irish Pubs in Mainz

    by BB9199 Updated Jun 23, 2008

This place is pretty new, big, and in the center of town. By far I'd say the best Irish Pub in Mainz, owned and operated by two Irish friends it's not the normal "Irish pub machine" run by some company that you run into in cities like Frankfurt. Its the traditional Irish pub in all categories. Real nice place to meet people, and is frequented by local Germans, Irish, English, etc. probably 50/50 between German and English speakers and very laid back. Has a huge beer garden in the front during the summer with flat screen TV's all around inside and outside to watch football, cricket, rugby, hurling, etc. Also has the occasional live music night but usually has some extra theme at least once a week. The best thing is the traditional Irish food they serve. They have a full Irish breakfast every Sunday, and other authentic Irish meals like fish and chips on Wednesdays and so on. All in all a really good time.

Dress Code: I don't think there is a dress code, normal clothes, it's very laid back.

    L'Arcade: Cozy city pub/bar

by yooperprof Written May 14, 2007

    2 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

You might want to boycott the place just because of the inflatable snowman, I know I thought about it.

But inside "L'Arcade" is completely different, a warm and comfortable city center bar which exudes charm and historic grace. An excellent to warm up with "ein bier", or for a more substantial lunch or dinner if you choose.

Just around the corner from the Dom, on Augustinerstrasse.

    Arcade fire?

    The Irish Pub: Mainz Pubs

by Verdone Updated Jul 16, 2006

The Irish Pub is in the basement of a residential building in Mainz, Germany. This is a traditional Irish pub with live music every night of the week. The crowd is a mixture of local Germans and U.S. service members. If you are in the U.S. military and stationed nearby in Wiesbaden, this pub is a great place to meet locals and experience the local culture.

Dress Code: There is no dress code.

Restaurant - bar - beer garden: Heiliggeist

    by Kristina1701 Written Jul 23, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is a really interesting place. The Heiliggeist used to be a church and thus makes for a unique atmosphere.
If you're looking for a cocktail bar you better go to the Havana which is just next door but otherwise the Heiliggeist offers all kinda drinks and dishes.
The age group of their guests is about 25/30+ I'd say.

    Citrus

    by Kristina1701 Written Jun 12, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is a really cool bar at the Rhine River, next to Fort Malakoff Centre and the Hyatt hotel. In summer you can also sit outsides. Till midnight they also offer several dishes.
This summer the Citrus has its own beach at the Rhine River btw!
I'd say that most of the people who go there at night are in their 20s-early 30s. In the afternoon you'll find all age groups there though.

In summer you can sit on their terrace too. However make sure to check out the interior too; looks really interesting! For pics have a look at their hp!

If you like to be surrounded by one of the best, freshest, tastiest brewed beer, you're in the right place.
Food is great, rush to have a seat at a table or at the bar!
Amaze yourself by all the flavours of tasty German food and
an 'Ein Meter'. You'll start 'normal' you'll end singing.
