While I was on my Rhine River cruise we pass this interesting castle in the river. They said that Kind Ludwig once used it as a toll booth that charged every ship that passed. It's was really cool to sail by it just as they would have soooo many years ago. It was amazingly well intact for being in the middle of the river.
There are quite a good deal of things to do while you are in the Rhine River region between Koblenz and Mainz, Germany. Not only is there the river and the castles, but there are a ton of small towns and cities scattered along the banks of the water, some are tucked away in the vineyards that cover the hillsides! Some of the better towns to visit (in my opinion), are Bacharach, Bingen, Koblenz, St. Goar, and Cologne. The Burg Eltz is a nice castle even though it's not right on the river.
When you're taking your Rhine River cruise (and I urge you too), make sure to sit on the top deck, not inside. Listen to the commentator cause he'll point out castles, towers, bridges, and towns. Here's a lovely tower I caught a good glimpse of while on the cruise.
The Mainz portion of the Rhine River is lovely but it is hard to compare them with the part outside of mainz. Still worth a nice walk anytime of the day.
Watch out for the Sunrise in the morning
