Favorite thing: Neustadt's old town is a mix of wine romantic and busy town life. With about 50.000 inhabitants Neustadt is the centre for the Weinstraße region. Most streets in the centre are pedestrianized, which makes walking around pleasant. The main shopping streets are Hauptstraße, Kellereistraße and Friedrichstraße, where you find many little shops and also some chain stores. The side lanes, especially Metzgergasse/Kunigundenstraße and Mittelgasse/Hintergasse (see separate tips), are the romantic "old world charm" areas. The mild climate of the wine region allows growing vines in front of the houses. The presence of potted palm trees in the warmer season adds some Southern flair.
A very practical and useful idea of the tourist office: Free leaflets with maps of the town, as well as two different information brochures about the town and region, are on display in these boxes outside the door. They are accessible any time, 24/7, independent from the opening hours of the tourist information office. Just open the lid of the box and grab one.
Location: Hetzelplatz - if you walk from the train station towards the old town across the square and through the underground passage you pass right there.
