as I said in my intro, Nickenich ich quite old, infact one of the oldest places in Rheinland-Pfalz. the Celts camp out here till they moved on for the British Isles, the Romans arrived and on and on it goes.
the Church alone is over 800year old, and the Centerpiece of the Village, the Church plays a great role in Villages like Nickenich. a place where old and young come together for mass and afterwards a beer in the pub
Fondest memory: Ihave some great memories, which I might share one day with you
meanwhile.....the page is under permanent construction ^..^
the inside of the church has undergone numerous facelifts, this picture shows the latest 1997, beautiful dome, leadlight windows creating an athmosphere of simple beauty....and a very good organ, which comes clear through the fantastic accustic of the church!!
Fondest memory: I like the church straight lines, no pompous interio, a quiet, spirital place.
loved the choir, which I was a member of for several years
I always liked walking around the village. having a chat with people I know, sitting in front of the house, having a cuppa together...teasing passers by
Fondest memory: I loved running through the Canola fields and Corn fields, nick some grob and eating it raw. when I say nick.. that is just a flippend expression of childhood memories
walkways around the Church, and an old cementary gives information of the past, the epitaphs are quite interesting to read
Fondest memory: I remember vividly, my Aunt and Mother would not walk around the church at dark, superstition or plain fear, would scare the daylight out of them.
often we had run out of essentials for dinner, so they send me down to the grocer. honestly, I had no problems to walk ...fast, through the old cementary.
and when ever I travel to a new place, funny as it is, I find my way to the cementary, quite happy walking around and reading epitaphs
the centerpiece ..the Altar..
Fondest memory: as a child I did not realy appriciate church going, Gran always made me go. and when I skipped, exchanged church for the sporting ground, then I had to deal with severe repercution in the evening.....mostly I was grounded for the next sunday, church and strictly home afterwards.....no football! and I never understood, why the boys could have their sunday fun
