    Gruener Baum is the oldest inn of Oestrich-Winkel and you will find it in the back part of the village - since more than 350 years it is an inn. I passed by it early in the morning so I cannot say anything about its restaurant, BUT I simply loved that great architecture with the lovely half-timbered facade and the cosy restaurant-garden next to it !
    Oestrich-Winkel is certainly a great place to take a walk of 1 hour or so, before you start to explore the quite modern and touristy places like Ruedesheim etc.
    Oestrich will be a much more typical Rhine-village than most of the other places in the touristy Rhine-valley...

    Oestrich-Winkel is one of the first villages of interest in the Rhine-valley, when you arrive from Wiesbaden at the right bank of the river Rhine / Rhein.
    The area around Oestrich-Winkel is still quite flat, but very fertile and the vinyards date back to the roman times. In the year 850 the village of Oestrich was for the first time mentioned in the history books.
    Oestrich-Winkel is mostly overseen by the tourists exploring the Rhine-valley, that is a pity, because prices are quite low there, the wine tastes great and you may see plenty of lovely half-timbered houses - in one of the most beautiful (Hotel Schwan) you may even rent a room in order to explore the Rhine-valley from there.

    Pfarrhof St. Martin is the parsonage of the catholic church of St.Martin and it also dates back many centuries : It was mentioned in the history-books already in the year 1000 and was destroyed by the swedish troops - like the church and most other buildings of that village in 1635. It was rebuilt again and since 1829 untill today it is used as parsonage of Oestrich-Winkel.

    Oestricher Kran is the most famous landmark of Oestrich-Winkel and it dates back to the 16th century. In 1635 it was stolen by Swedish troops but reconstructed in 1652 and the one that you may still see today dates back to 1744 and was in use untill 1925.
    That crane was used in order to load the heavy wine-vats to the Rhine-ships and inside of the building you may see heavy wheels that were moved by human power.
    Normally it is not possible to see the interior of that crane, but you may get close to it, when walking along the river and you will find a nice recreation-area there with benches in order to enjoy a pick-nick at the river Rhine !

    St.Martin church dates back to the year 1508, but at the same place there used to be another church already since the year 850. In 1635 this catholic church was destroyed by the swedish troops and rebuilt again . In 1893 it was restored in neo-gothic-style, the way that it looks today.
    Take your time, when exploring the great interior of that lovely church !
    this church is really worth a closer look, you may enter it freely and without restrictions during the day.
