Rüdesheim Things to Do

Ruedesheim am Rhein and Geisenheim are neighboring ancient wine producing cities located on the north side of the Rhine River, just a few kilometers southeast of the city of Wiesbaden. We explored the region by rental car, but train and bus service to the wine villages is excellent.

Late Gothic to early Renaissance era half timbered architecture dominates the cities and villages all along the lower Rhine valley, and these two fascinating villages have some of the most ornate and artistic of these buildings in Germany. The building shown in photo #1 is about 500 years old and very typical of the eye appealing ancient buildings that await visitors of the Land Rheinland-Pfalz villages. The octagonal turret with its conical roof gives this history laden building much of its character. Many of these ancient and incredibly well preserved buildings now serve as guesthouses, restaurants. taverns, bakeries, and shops. The old world traditions of Germany are very much alisve in this region. The towns were built directly on the riverbanks and on and below the steep hills rising almost vertically above the river. Wine grape vinyards occupy the steep hillsides, as they have for at least 700 years.

After your gondola ride to the top of the vineyards, walk a little ways, and you'll run into a gigantic bronze statue of the first ruler of Germany (once unified). It's an impressive and almost intimidating sight, looming over the town of Rudesheim. The views around here are magnificant and you can pay a euro to look into the viewfinder.

My favorite experience in Rudesheim was the gonola ride. It slowly ascends to the top of the hill as you are presented with a panoramic view of the surroundings. Beneath and all around you are wine vineyards and nearby, the Rhine River. The gondolas are safe, seat two, and never reach "that high" off the ground. Make sure you buy a roundtrip and save your tickets. One way trips last about 12 minutes. At the top are the best views, the Kaiser Wilhelm monument, and a restaurant and bathroom.
