Landeck is one of three castles around Klingenmuenster. The town had a prosperous Benedictine abbey and the castles were built for protection.
Landeck has some original parts from the 12th century. It was extended in the 14th and 15th century. The Burgfried is still in good shape and its height is 23 meters. In 1689 the French invaders destroyed the castle.
At the castle there is a cheap inn or "Burgschänke". After walking up the hill to the castle it is very nice to have some refreshments, to sit outside and enjoy the views. There is a car park by the castle ruins. It's easiest to drive here via Klingenmuenster. You can also do various hikes in the forests of this nature park.
Inside the Burgfried or castle's donjon are some empty cabinets, maybe for future exhibitions. But a model of the castle can be seen already now. Unfortunately due to the unfinished exhibition status, it is pretty dark inside. You will need a couple of minutes to adjust to the dim lighting.more
From the donjon you can clearly see the remaining parts of the former living areas with the west living area (no. 14 on the castle's map) better to see on the lower right side of the picture.You can climb up some steps (from the courtyard) and sit in the recessed window alcoves within the mighty walls.more
