It is quite amazing to wander through the ruins. There are enough to take the better part of an afternoon.
We received a map outlining the walls etc. of the castle. You have to read that map well to figure out if the ruins in front of you are from the 1200's or the 1800's or somewhere between. Basically, the centre of the ruins was first, and each expansion grew around the original castle.
As well as the various ruins, there is a museum which included plans and pictures for the various ages of the castle.

From the river-side walls of the castle, this is the view of the Rhine. The reason the castle was built was to collect tolls from merchants that used the Rhine to move goods inland. The view is quite spectacular.
The price to enter the grounds in 2003 was 4 Euros (plus 2 or 3 Euros for parking). The ruins are open daily from March to October, and on weekends in winter.

This is the outline of the ruins at Rheinfels. You are presented with two routes along with details about a number of the highlights of the castle. There are interesting points -- for instance the views over the Rhine River, the walls behind which the solders would shoot at invaders, and the Great Cellar - a vault constructed in the 15th century for storing food and wine which is still used for medieval parties today.
