Things to Do

The famous postage stamp house and oriel

The famous postage stamp house and oriel, Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  St. Martin was famous to the world already in 1949, when this particular oriel at one of the vintner houses was chosen motif for a stamp. The stamp was of a series which were special these days. Germany did already exist after WWII but the region of Palatinate (and Saarland)...

Vineyards – a delight to walk and relax

Vineyards – a delight to walk and relax, Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  St. Martin is surrounded by vineyards. Thus I highly recommend walking through these to get an idea of how wine is grown in this part of Germany. Most probably it is not that much different than in other regions but the views cannot be beaten. Especially if you walk to the...

Mysterious Madonna in the Baroque garden

Mysterious Madonna in the Baroque garden, Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  When walking through St. Martin, you will come across the name Dalberg very often. These are an old noble family who once inherited the castle south of St. Martin, Kropsburg. It is said that the Dalberg family once belonged to the supporters of the emperors who have...

A special place: bible garden

A special place: bible garden, Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  A special place in St. Martin is the so-called Bibelgarten (bible garden) of the main church devoted to St. Martin. Vintner Peter Straub, passionate botanist in his leisure time, was the initiator of this garden, which is said to be the biggest in middle Europe. In this...

Walk through this beautiful village

Walk through this beautiful village, Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  St. Martin is rather small, so an hour or two is already enough to get captured by this magic atmosphere of the village. The locals certainly have the taste to decorate their houses with an exuberance of plants and wine. The vines often span across the street from one house...

Restaurants

Weingut Gernert: Excellent Palatinate meals

Weingut Gernert: Excellent Palatinate meals, Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  St. Martin has countless wineries and vintage outlets (the ones which are open only on weekends in the wine months), so it is difficult to pick up the best place to eat. I chose Gernert because of their convenient location at the end of the village (direction Maikammer, on...

Hotel Restaurant Winzerhof: Romantic courtyard in summer :-)

Hotel Restaurant Winzerhof: Romantic courtyard in summer :-), Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  During our recent trip to St. Martin, we wanted only a small snack and have decided to stop at Winzerhof Becker’s in the main street. They had waffles with vanilla ice cream on the board and this was what made my colleague from Australia go straight into the restaurant. She...

Walk to St. Martin through the vineyards :-)

St. Martin is located in the middle part of Palatinate, approx. 30 km west of Speyer, 60 km west of Heidelberg and 130 km southwest of Frankfurt. And, in case Mark (@Travelfrosch) finds this: 47 km southeast of KL. Unfortunately it does not have an own train station, but can easily be reached by bus from nearby Maikammer (station Maikammer-Kirrweiler). IC/EC trains stop in nearby Neustadt (an der Weinstraße).
From the Maikammer-Kirrweiler train stations there are regular busses: the so-called PalatinaBus stops in St. Martin.

I can’t say anything about parking possibilities, since I came walking from Maikammer. But I am sure that it is useless to look for a parking place inside of the town. The spare lots should be reserved for residents. But according to google maps there might be bigger parking space north of the town, along Totenkopf-Straße (yes, translates into skull road), which is the one leading up to Palatinate’s highest hill Kalmit.

More information here, albeit in German:

Madonnas and other cute statues

Madonnas and other cute statues, Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  Madonna statues are quite popular in regions with Catholic population, especially in bishoprics which were or still are very dominant. (In case of St. Martin it is the one of Speyer.) But in St. Martin it is not only Madonna statues who protect the houses but also other very...

"Italian" storage huts in the vineyards

"Italian" storage huts in the vineyards, Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  I discovered stone huts like this one first a bit north of Palatinate, in Rheinhessen to be precise. Since the huts there look very much like the ones down south in Italy, in Alberobello, I did a bit of research and found out that they have most probably been built by...

(St. Martin) Vineyard specialities

(St. Martin) Vineyard specialities, Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  Many of the little wine villages in Palatinate have what is called “after work vintners”. This means that regular vintners rent rows of vine to locals who then take care of the plants during the season. They harvest them and bring them to the vintners who to make wine. This...

Overgrowing plants and dreamy parts

Overgrowing plants and dreamy parts, Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  Especially in spring, summer and autumn the plant decorations on houses and balconies and in gardens are overwhelming. I especially loved the balcony in my second photo – it must be most magic to spend the evening time there with a good book and wine of course. This balcony...

The famous blacksmith from Maikammer :-)

The famous blacksmith from Maikammer :-), Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  This already caught my eye in neighbour village Maikammer some time ago: obviously the local (Maikammer) blacksmith will never run out of orders or has a good marketing strategy: wrought iron decoration is very prominent in both villages. (most probably also in the other...

House decorations, wine related :-)

House decorations, wine related :-), Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  Very typical for Palatinate wine villages are the house decorations which very often are related to wine. Be it a little wine barrel next to the house number, be it wrought iron vines or carvings in the sandstone on a house – wine rules the regions and the villages! In...

Tourist office, in the old wine cellar

Tourist office, in the old wine cellar, Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  The former wine cellar of St. Martin where ages ago the vintners delivered their tithe (wine tithe of course) to St. Martin’s barons, is now housing the tourist office. When I finally arrived there it was already closed, so I can’t say anything about their services. Though I...

Mediterrean climate, typical for Palatinate

Mediterrean climate, typical for Palatinate, Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  Palatinate, the part of state Rheinland-Pfalz, is known for a very mild climate. It is amazing how many flowers and plants can grow here compared to the rest of Germany. I know this, since I grew up in the region, but I was still amazed to see this araucaria growing here and...

St Martin, patron saint

St Martin, patron saint, Sankt Martin

Trekki Says:  St. Martin of Tours is the patron saint of the village and that’s why a statue of him is standing above the stairs to the main church, the one with the bible garden. The statue is made of the local pink sandstone. In fact one of the sandstone quarries in Palatinate is...
