Whoever looks at my writings from time to time might know that bookstores do have some magic attraction to me – I just cannot pass without entering (and usually leave with a big pile of books, but that’s off-topic here, lol). Being used to antique German opening hours (i.e. shops are closed on Sunday), I stood in front of this bookstore with open mouth and for a while couldn’t believe what I saw. But, I wasn’t hallucinating – this bookstore is open on Sundays ! It is small but has a very big selection of local and regional books on nearly all subjects (in fact the biggest selection of local books I ever saw): regional food, hiking and biking in the region, wine, Jakobsweg (camino de Santiago), books about the Cathedral, history, postcards, maps, local storeis – you name it ! They also had (have now in Feb 2007) a selection of books and kids toys about pirates, following the actual exhibition in the Historical Museum of the Palatine. That’s, as they also have a branch office in the museum (or better: they are the bookstore of the museum shop). Buch Oelbermann has several branch offices in Speyer and surroundings, check their website for the other ones.
I bought two books about Speyer (see photos) for 14,80 € resp. 12 € and a map with all recreation and otherwise interesting spots for 2,95 €. Very much to my (moving) surprise they also had THE book I did have at school (photo 3) and without that, well…. without that I wouldn’t be able to type on the keyboard or read pages here, haha.
The prices of special books are very much fair (not as overpriced as in many other towns), maybe the print run is higher. We were in Speyer on a Sunday but only did some window shopping. Germany has quite rigorous regulations regarding shopping hours, the only ones open on a Sunday are petrol stations, railway stations and airports and even these can close without prior warning. The exception to these regulations are pharmacies and bakeries - well we all need the staff of life and medications sometimes, they operate on a rota system. Another thing about shopping is they close early on a Saturday between 13.00 & 14.00. I did like the pretty window displays and some of the goods looked tempting like the funny sheep and the delicous ginger breads - but hey I don't really like shopping and it saved me some money.

the museum-shop by globetrott Inside the entrancehall of the Museum you will find an excellent shop offering not only books, postcards etc. of the exhibits inside the Museum, but also collectibles of small-scale cars, ships and airplanes. I actually never saw such a wide offer - and prices are also moderate !!
I may highly recommend "Das große Museumsbuch" - it has more than 400 pages with hundreds of great pics and costs just 9,90 Euros !! Most of the technical infos you may find on my page here on VT were taken from out there.
All prices are really moderate ! Leave a Comment Theme: OtherDirections: The shop is next to the ticket-counter in the entrancehall & you will get through the shop, when you leave the Technik museum !

by Sjalen Speyer is not a shopping town but it still has the wonderfully inspiring Maximilianstrasse and its side streets, where everything is concentrated, making shopping an easy affair on the feet. My own favourite is the Osiander book shop in Wormser Strasse which only has a small section of English books if you do not read German, but which has wondeful coffee table travel books upstairs, lots of nice stationery such as Moleskin note books, and which also has a relaxing section in the middle where you can sit and read books about the Moon, health issues and New Age in a calm setting with tranquil music CDs. But there is so much more in the area...Nürnberger Lebkuchen in beautiful tins, photo shops for VT members and of course several clothes shops. And then I haven't even mentioned the art gallery shops. All around you, there are inviting coffee and ice cream cafes where you can stop and re-fuel.
I came away with a wonderful "tear off calendar" with Italian grammar. Five minutes every day :) Leave a Comment Theme: Other
