Maria Laach Benedictine Abbey is near Lake Laacher in the Eifel region about 80 km’s south of Cologne.

The abbey is dominated by the impressive towers of the Klosterkirche and it is reputed to be one of the most beautiful Romanesque buildings in all of Germany.

Burg Eltz - not far from the Mosel-valley
  • Tip Rating:
  • Burg Eltz is one of the most beautiful castles in Germany and it is situated about 40km east of Cochem. Burg Eltz is one of the very few castles in Germany that is owned by the same family for more than 800 years now. The castle was built on top of a steep rock , that is almost totally surrounded by a small river and only a narrow path is leading to the castle-entrance.
A draw-bridge was used to defend it in medieval times. The eldest part of the castle dates back to the 12th century, and more and more "modern" parts were added in the later centuries step by step, and so the castle as it looks today is more like a mosaique of different architectural styles.
The castle-courts may be visited freely, but for a tour through the ancient living-rooms of the " Edlen Herren von Burg Eltz" with plenty of works of art and great furniture, you have to pay a fee of 6 Euros .
NO photograpy is allowed during the guided tour !!

For more infos and pics about Burg Eltz - please click on my link below !

Beilstein - Sleeping Beauty on the Mosel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Beilstein is a small village along the river Mosel / Moselle and it has the Nickname "Sleeping Beauty on the Mosel"( "Dornröschen an der Mosel" ) because the old castle-ruins remind a bit of the well-known fairy-tale.
The castle of Beilstein dates back to the time, when robber-barons were able to get high taxes from the merchants using the river Mosel for transporting their goods.Just a few giant ruins are left over today from the former castle Metternich / Burgruine Metternich. There is a small entrance-fee of 1,5 Euros for the whole castle and you may step up the big tower and enjoy the excellent view over the valley of the river Mosel / Moselle.
When walking through the small village of Beilstein you will get the impression, that the whole village consists only of vineries, inns, restaurants, hotels and private B&B.It is really hard to make your choice between the many temptaions !
The innerpart of the village is off limits for car trafic and only the local people are allowed to drive there very carefully at restricted times.

  • Directions: Beilstein is a small village at the right bank of the river Mosel / Moselle - about 12km upstream from Cochem. There is a small car-ferry directely at Beilstein. Next train-station is Cochem & a bus will take you to Beilstein from there.

    Speyer
  • Tip Rating:
  • Speyer is a beautiful city a bit off the beaten path. It has a bautiful roman cathedreal, which belongs to the world heritage of the Unesco. There are other things to visit: an old city gate, a jewish bath, the technic museum, the sealife, ......

    One of the smallest buildings

This great building in the very centre of Bernkastel is just a few meters from the old townhall and when you click on my picture, you may see that the ground-floor is just 2 meters wide, while the upper floors are getting wider step by step.
What a great building that has a small "Weinstube" inside, so you may actually also explore the architecture from inside. In a village like Bernkastle the ground was quite expensive and the biggest parts of it were used for the vinyards, so you may see that every little corner of the village was used to build houses.

  • Directions: This building is on the right of the Marktplatz / market-square, when you com from the river. You simply procede to the old townhall, and turn to the left, as soon as you are there !

    Enchanting Pfälzerwald: hiking and sagas

    Pfälzerwald - Palatine
    Forest

    Region: Palatinate/Pfalz
Nearest airport: Frankfurt International or Karlsruhe (for Ryanair)

    *****************
As a kid, I knew this forest pretty well. My father took me here quite often and I remember countless walks through the thick woods, along fairy tale rock formations or along the little rivers. All our walks ended somewhere in one of the cosy little forest restaurants, where I had my hot chocolate or apple juice and a thick fresh bread with one of the Palatine specialities, Weißer Käs’ (quark or curd with onions, chives and paprika). It was heaven for me, and maybe, haha, this is where my passion for hiking started.
All is still there, but much more organised by now. The possibilities for hiking, biking and all other forest related activities are endless! Well, forest is actually a misleading term, as the Palatine Forest or Pfälzerwald it is a huge region, approx. 1800 square kilometres. UNESCO has declared it Biosphere Reserve, together with the adjacent Vosges in the south. The highest peak is Kalmit with 673 m, southwest of Neustadt. This might not sound high, but does this matter?
While the northern part of Palatine forest is mostly thick woods with many hiking trails, the southern part is full of pink sandstone rock formations, ideal for rock climbing. Some formations have strange shapes, so be prepared to see the Teufelstisch (Devil’s Table), Jungfernsprung (virgin’s jump) and other legendary rocks.
The forest is also dotted with a lot of famous castles, Trifels for example, where Richard Lionheart was once held as a prisoner.
And two interesting historical train trails are kept in Pfälzerwald. One is most interesting for kids as well – the Kuckucksbähnel near Neustadt. Why? Just look at the photos on Kuckucksbähnel’s website and you know why.

Some websites have detailed information about Pfälzerwald (Palatinate Forest) and the communities, but unfortunately most are only in German:
    Pfälzerwald and clickable map
Wanderportal Pfalz, the most detailed one
    Naturpark Pfälzerwald
Pfälzerwald Touristik and links to the communities.

I wrote this tip in November 2007, but have exchanged photos and revamped the text (January 2009).

    Niederwalddenkmal
  • Tip Rating:
  • Niederwalddenkmal is the landmark of the region near Bingen - but in Hessen. You can see it from far on the hill over Ruedesheim. There are wonderful possibilities to hike in the forest. And there are several places where you have a wonderful view on the Rhine.
The Niederwalddenkmal was built in 1871 to remember the war 1870/71.

  • Directions: There is a cable car in Ruedesheim to the Niederwalddenkmal. I was going there by car. The parking is not free.
