    School trips!

    They were everywhere

In the beginning of July the local schools make their school trips. Often they take the riverboat to visit Bernkastel-Kues. And believe me; you don't want to be in the same boat with them!
We took our boat from Traben side of the river and from the other side (Trarbach) almost one hundred school kids invaded the boat. Well, luckily the boat staff kept them away from the bar (teachers didn't bother) so there was one quiet area on board.
The scenery was great, especially the Ürzig bend. Also the wine served on the boat was good -of course.

Check on which side your boat departs

Boat landings on both sides of the river
    1 more image

Boat landings are situated both on the Traben and on the Trarbach side of the river. If you arrive on a river boat cruise, enquire a) on which side your boat will be landing and b), more important, whether the return cruise departs from the same landing or from the other side. Some cruise ships arrive in Traben, stay there for the intermission and then move over to Trarbach to begin their return journey from there.

    High water

This is not really a travel warning because high water is quite rare. The last dramatic high water was in 1993 and it is by far the highest.
In the 1st and 2nd photo you can see that they've made measures to keep eventual water out by raising a barrier in the street on the Trarbach side of the Mosel.
On hotel Bellevue you can see how high the water came. The oldest measurement there is, I think, 1830.
The 3rd photo shows a yellow line where you see some more high water periods.
On the 4th photo you see the highest sign on 22 Dec. 1993 (that's the pink colon). To illustrate I've added the 5th photo where you can see that same pink colon (with the lantern on top) at the entrance of the hotel. That is really high!
