Dom Gift Shop: House of Hope

by Maryimelda Updated Feb 9, 2010

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Most Cathedrals and many churches the world over come complete with a Gift Shop or Piety Stall. The Gift Shop located in Domstadt in Trier just opposite the Dom and Liebfrauenkirche is a truly memorable one for me. Whilst wandering through browsing the items on sale, I came across an array of small matchbox like boxes, each of which contained a small bronze angel medallion. On the front of each box were the words "Sometimes you need an angel" and there were boxes in many different languages. I could see only two that were written in English and I was immediately reminded of two friends back in Australia who were suffering from various forms of cancer. I felt compelled to bring these two angels back to these two men. Both were very touched when I gave them their angels and their reaction to their unexpected gift made me very happy. Big news is that both men are now in remission. I can only wonder if perhaps the angels gave them both some much needed hope.

  • Stoffmarkt Modemeter: the best fabrics store in southwest Germany

by Goldfee Written Sep 18, 2013

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

This is one great shop to buy fabrics. Not so easy to find, since it is not in the city centre. Its located in the south of Trier and once you reach it there is no window, just a metal door and it leads to the store in the backyard.

But don't worry, you come in and find it is paradise for fabrics lovers.

Thousands of fabrics for anything you can or even cannot imagine. The people do not speak much english but they are so comforting and helpful.

I could have spent hours in that store and look, look, look and feel and touch all this wonderful fabrics. Heavenly! What a treasure!

    None: Local Craftsmen

by hquittner Written Jul 9, 2006

    3 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are several artisans and vendors of stuff around the open area where Simeonstrasse opens into the space leading to the Porta Nigra. One of these was a fellow who worked in aluminum wire. This is an infrequent craft and some of the pieces were portable. My caretakers were avid horse people and he did not have a horse for sale. Apparently the price and size were satisfactory because he ran home and was back with a fine item for her by the time we finished lunch at the Hauptmarkt.

What to buy: If he is there maybe something will catch your eye

What to pay: Cash--I did not ask.

Square shopping (all kinds of shopping): It is supposed to be good............

    by HAROLD_PR Updated Dec 21, 2002

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

The "downtown" or the "centre" area of this city is full of stores and shops. Like the title says, this shopping in Trier is supposed to be quite cheap, but i can't really assure that at the moment. I don't have much experience shopping there......

Try it yourself if you are around here :-)

What to buy: Clothes, Shoes, Accesories, Food, just about anything

What to pay: not too much

    Aldi: The cheapest grocery store

    by drei3t Written Feb 14, 2005

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Aldi is the legendary grocery store, that has only handful of different products and is even cheaper than Lidl.

What to buy: Kräuterlikör Jagdbitter - it is a very cheap Jägermeister clone with the same taste and amount of alcohol.

6-pack of bier was 1,65 euros.

What to pay: Less than in any other store.

  • Music Shop

    by Ladymarian1 Written May 19, 2007

Can't remember the name of the music shop in Trier, but it was on one of the main streets. Prices are extremely good compared to the UK and the Staff speak Englishand are really helpful. It is filled with recorders and all other sorts of musical goodies - a real Aladins cave. Prices for recorders - all shapes and sizes were a lot cheaper than Salzburg

    What to buy: Musical instruments

What to pay: About half of what you would in the UK
