Build as an annex to the Dom, the Virgin of Maria church was constructed in the 13 th century. Its a good example of architectural simplicity as well as optic clearness. straight geometrical forms are the design of the church. The church showes a lot of impressive statues as well as a beutifull but simple interiour.
The Liebfrauenkirche, or the Church of Our Lady, is the oldest Gothic church in Germany. Built between 1235 and 1250, the vaulted ceiling is supported by 12 columns. Each of the columns has been decorated with a portrait of each of the 12 Apostles. The placement of these portraits has been done in such a way that all 12 can be viewed at once when one stands in a particular spot within the church marked by a black stone in the floor.
The craftsmen from Lorraine who built this structure adorned it with many intricate stone carvings of local saints and other prominent figures from church history.
the liebfrauenkirche, (church of our lady) is located next to the dom. this beautiful gothic church was built between 1235 and 1260. this one of the oldest examples of early gothic architecture in germany. inside the church on columns are 15th century paintings of the twelve apostles. also there are a number of important tombs one of which is the tomb of karl von metternich.
The Gothic Liebfrauenkirche adjoins the Trierer Dom so there really is no excuse for missing it!
Although the exact date of construction is not known an inscription painted on one of its twelve columns (representing the 12 Apostles) states that it was started in 1227. It is certainly the oldest Gothic church in Germany and almost certainly stands on a site used for earlier place of worship (a glass segment in the floor allows you a glimpse of earlier structures). For centuries the Liebfrauenkirche was used by the cathedral clergy for their daily Mass and also as a burial place, although the graves have long been removed.
It's a round church, unusual in itself, and its interior is lovely: cross-shaped aisles, twelve columns which all have paintings. The stained glass, although modern, is really beautiful. I was lucky enough to visit on a day with sunshine: a gentleman stopped me as I was about to enter the church and told me (in German) how beautiful the windows were that day and said I must go inside. He was right: the whole interior seemed bathed in coloured light, with patterns on the sides of the columns. It was truly lovely.
Liebfrauenkirche(Our Lady's Church) was built in the 13th century. It is the oldest Gothic church in Germany. Unfortunately, when I was there it was completely closed for repair. It is open again now.
The Liebfrauen church, or Notre Dame, was built during the 13th century, between 1212 and 1242 in early gothic style. The church endured severe damage during the 2nd world war but was rebuild afterwards.
The Liebfrauenkirche (Church of our Dear Lady) sits next to the Dom in the center of the city. It was begun in 1235 on the site of an earlier Roman church, and completed around 1260. This church is unique due to its Greek cross shape with the alter in the center, and the 12 columns inside the structure. This church is beautiful in the afternoon when the sunlight streams through the colorful stained glass windows and shines on the pillars and floor.
Liebfrauenkirche is one of Germany's first Gothic churches, and is a UN World Heritage Site.
The Liebfraukirche (as you can see on the satelite view of the map, the marker points right but the text further down the pic is totally wrong. Again...) was built between 1235 and 1260. It is the oldest Gotic church in Germany. This building replaces another which was destroyed by the Normans in 882. That one in turn replaced an even older church from the 4th century.
The church was closed due to extensive renovations during my visit.
