St Peters Fountain by Ewingjr98 St Peters Fountain sits in the center of the main market place and was constructed in 1595. Like many of the other historical sites in city, it was covered in sandbags to protect it from damage from allied air raids during WWII. The statues on the fountain represent wise governing of the city in the form of justice, fortitude, temperance, and prudence. I think they forgot wine. Not much of this extraordinar 4th-century structure remains above ground, but the maze of passageways below is fantastic and well worth exploring. The baths were established by the emperor Constantine and were among the largest in the entire Roman empire. Strangely enough, they were never completed nor used for their intended purpose. Over 20,000 spectators once jammed the terraces of the oldest Roman structure in Trier to watch the gladiators fight, a form of spectacle that continued into the Christian era. Be sure to climb down into the cellars under the areana, and examine theside chambers that served as cages. Much of the stone work was exploited as a quarry during the Middle Ages, but enough remains to imagine yourself back in the 1st century AD, when it was built. Of all the people born in Trier, the one who had the greatest impact on society was undoubtedly Karl Marx, who lived from 1818 until 1883. Both the life of communism's prophet and the worldwide spread of socialism is traced in minute detail in this historic site. This is the very symbol of Trier and one of the finest Roman Relics anywhere. Built toward the 2nd centruy AD as a massive fortified gate, it was converted into a church about 1040 and restored to its original appearance by Nepoleon after 1804, when Trier was a part of France. No mortar was used in its construction; instead, the stone blocks are joined by iron clamps. The name, meaning black gate, derives from its present color - the result of centruies of pollution. Porta Nigra, Trier, Germany by SurfaceTravel From their web site, listed below: "The gate dates back to a time (about A.D. 180) when the Romans often erected public buildings of huge stone blocks (here, the biggest weigh up to six metric tons)." "Rust traces can be seen in many holes on the outside because in the Middle Ages people chiseled these holes to retrieve the metal for recycling. The stone blocks were spared a recycling because of the Greek monk Simeon." "After his death in 1034/5, he was buried inside the gate and made a saint. In his honor, two churches were built into the gate (torn down 1804-1819). The upper story of the eastern tower was razed - the only real damage to the stone gate, whose name, 'Black Gate', is medieval and goes back to the black pollution patina on the gray sandstone." If you are in Trier, this is worth visiting. There were knights acting out a scene when we were there. Steps go up about five floors where there are good views of the town. Contact details are of the "Tourist-Information Trier Stadt und Land".

One of the oldest churches in Germany. It's built up in the 11-12 th century. The church keeps treasures especially the holy skirt (heiliger Rock) and displays it every 30 years. It is said that the skirt belonged to Jesus, but after test actually the textile is from 1000 years ago when Jesus died already hundreds years. However, the skirt is still well kept as symbol. Park front of Kaisertherme by yatingchen Basilika (left) was once Caiser's holiday house and is now Christian (Evaganish) church. The Baroque building at its side is obvious. I was facing Kaiserthermen. It's the biggest Bath place from Rom time and was built in the 4 th century. Leave a Comment
