It's fun to walk around the Trierer Dom, just to feel the vibe of so much history. When we did this walk we realized that in ancient days it would have taken some more time to walk around it. The Trierer Dom used to be about four times as large as the present-day church and converting the area of the Cathedral and the Church of Our Lady, The Cathedral Square, the adjoining garden and the houses almost up to the Market. But, of course, the most fun and interesting is to enter the Triere Dom and admire its beauty. The admission to enter it is free.

Once we were inside we learned that the present Cathedral stands on top of a former Constantinian Palace. This palace was leveled in 330 and replaced by the Trierer Dom. It still contains a Roman central section with the original walls rsing up to a height of 26 meters. We walked through the 4th century gates, which let us into a cloistered courtyard with some tom stones. Amazing to see that some of them dated back to 1144!

When we returned from the burial site we decided to visit the Treasury Section. Be aware that this particular section requires an entrance fee of €1,50 per adult. But it's worth while when learning about the legend of the Holy Robe of Christ. The Holy Robe is the seamless garment said to be worn by Christ during the Crucifixion. The relic is sealed in a specially built baroque chapel. Another important relic which is on display in the Treasury is the Holy Nail, believed to be one of those used in the Crucifixion. Besides that the Treasury displays architecture and artwork from more than 1650 years.

After admiring these relics we returned to the triple-naved cathedral. It has an interior which is a combination of a Romanesque structure with baroque decorations and Gothic vaulting and archways. Finally on our way out we passed stone mason's marks and graffiti from seven centuries, the elaborate west protal, the Bishop's Palace, the Kesselstatt Palace and the gate marking the end of the Cathedral Close. Visiting the Trierer Dom was quite an experience. Just ignore the mass of tourists and enjoy this historical place!

Trier, which stands on the Moselle River, was a Roman colony dating back to the first century A.D.. After that period it was known as a great treading centre untill the beginning of the following century. It's also fun to mention that it became one of the capitals of the Tetrarchy at the end of the third century, when it was known as the "Second Rome". The number and quality of the surviving monuments are an outstanding testimony to Roman civilization.

We heared in advance that some visitors said that it might be easily mistaken for a fortress from the outside. Once we arrived in front of the cathedral we certainly didn't agree with that statement. We were simply amazed by its beauty and did realize its considerable historical significance to be the oldest church in Germany. Today the Trierer Dom (Trier Cathedral) remains a working Catholic cathedral and an important Catholic shrine that still receives pilgrims.

  • The Tourist Information Centre, next to the Porta Nigra, charges for simple maps and brochures of the type that one usually gets for free anywhere else.

Save 5 euros by printing your own info from the internet before you go.

Avoid "Romer Express train" just not worth it

  • it is a "train" that leaves from the main entrance of the town by the Porta Nigara and for €6 per adult they drive you by the old Roman sites. I tried this thinking I might get a general idea of the what to see and the location but this did not help. Nor did the prerecorded tape that was playing in German, French and English, but each time it played it was in a different order and we were already well passed what they said we should look at.
Save your money, get a good map from the tourist center also located in this area and go for a walk or just take a taxi.

just dont go unless you have a very large group (over 10 I think is free) but I would still not waste the time.
