Wittlich holds on the third weekend in August every year "Saeubrennerkirmes" (pig burning). During the festival in the city center Wittlicher grill pigs one after one and people stand in line buying grill-pork in bread. This year 2006 the festival was on 18-21 August. We visited the city on the last day and as leaving, they grilled already the 87th pig.
Each year, on the third weekend of august, we remember that incident and have a big beer and wine festival in the town. There are no cars in the center, all the people are on the marketplace, drinking, dancing, singing,....
And there is a big barbecue on the market place to grill pigs.
The little story why the people of Wittlich are called Saeubrenner (people who burn the pigs)
In the medieval age, they closed the city gates each evening, because they were afraid of the ennemy. One evening, the guard didn't find the bolt to close the door. So he took a carot instead of the bolt - and the door was closed.
In the middle of the night, a pig came, saw the carot and ate it. What happened: Yes, of course, the door opened and the ennemy entered the town. The people were very very angry and decided to punish the pigs.
So they made a big fire and hunted all the pigs on the market place and burnt them!
