A cruise is the nicest way to experience the landscape of the Mosel valley with its steep vineyards, castles, small towns and villages. Two different companies operate tourist boats on the Mosel that do the tour from Traben-Trarbach to Bernkastel-Kues and vice versa. The two companies don't cooperate so check where you buy your tickets and at which landing you have to wait for your boat.

    Company 1: Mosel-Schiffs-Touristik Michels
    Company 2: Personenschifffahrt Kolb

The lock cannot be visited on foot - the only way to see it from close by is by boat. The tour boats to Bernkastel-Kues pass through.

The Mosel is a rather busy waterway. Freight carriers transport coal, containers and other goods to the Saarland and further along the canals into France. Traffic jams in front of the locks happen. Some of these freighters are so big that they hardly seem to fit into the basin. They do, though, because both the length of the ships and the size of the lock basins are normed.

The ruins of castle Rosenburg aka Kunibertsburg once secured the exclave of Zeltingen ad Rachtig, the two villages that belonged to the Archbishop of Cologne. Not much is left of the castle. The view of the valley, however, is worth the climb.

The resting hiker in front of the winery 2 more images

People in Zeltingen have put up these funny figures in fron of their houses.
The tired hiker with his satchel is resting on a bench in front of the winery Martin Schömann in Uferallee 50 (who makes excellent Riesling wines, by the way - worth testing).
The winemaker is looking out from a porch a block further down the road.
Watch out for these figures, there are more also in the back streets, like the chemist having a lunch-break sandwich in front of the pharmacy (unfortunately I didn't take a photo of that one).
