One of the most interesting castles in Saxony is Schloss Lauenstein. It is actually a Renaissance chateau AND some ruins of a medieval castle.

The medieval castle was built in the 13/14th century and destroyed in the 16th century. It was rebuilt as a magnificent Renaissance chateau for the Bünau family. Since then only minor construction works were done. Fortunately, we say nowadays.

There are many excellent works of art to see like the two magnificent gates, Renaissance gables, sculptures, the Turkish hall with marvellous stucco works, the Bird's hall with frescos of birds and beautiful vaulted ceiling and so on. Don't miss the two nice small gardens.

The chateau is home of an interesting regional museum with exhibits on nature, culture, hunting and pictures of local painters.

Another highlight is the falconry show Tue-Sun 3 pm.

Probably the most beautiful Baroque church in the area is the small church in Schellerhau. It is an excellent example for the rural Saxon Baroque as it is to find in other small villages all over Saxony (very similar Reinhardtsdorf near Bad Schandau).

Originally built in Renaissance style 1591 - 93 it was redesigned in early Baroque style end of the 17th century. Very impressive and beautiful are the paintings on the ceiling and the balconies depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament.

The magnificent altar is the other highlight in the church - with a painting depicting the Last Supper and another depicting the crucifixion, works by Christian M?nnigen from 1681.

    Geising, town hall

Geising is a cute very small town some km east of Altenberg. It is located on the rail line (Dresden-) Heidenau - Altenberg and thus easily to access.

Like most of the towns in the area Geising was founded as a mining town in the 15th century. The structure of the town has not changed much since 1526 - many houses are originally preserved since that time. However, don't expect most magnificent buildings - the town and the people have never been rich in the area. You will some interesting and nice timber-framed houses and also houses of stone with beautiful sandstone portals. Probably the most beautiful town house is the so called "Saitenmacherhaus", built in 1608 with vaulted ceilings, carved wooden ceilings and frescos inside. You can go in and see yourself since there is a flower shop inside.

The nice town hall was built 1908 in a very similar style to the older town houses. Nowadays it is home for the tourist office too.

Not to miss is the church. It was rebuilt 1689 - 94, including older parts from around 1500. Very impressive is the main altar from 1750 with several paintings (Last Supper, crucifixion, evangelists Lucas and John), spiral columns etc. Next to the main altar you see the central part of a medieval woodcarved altar from 1510 (Freiberg school). The organ is another gem, a work of Johann Daniel Ranfft, 1755 - 57.

The town is well known for its carnival and the ice - skating/hockey outdoor + indoor hall.

    Castle Frauenstein

The ruins of castle Frauenstein are very impressive. It was built in the 13th century and withstood many attacks due to its huge walls. End of the 16th century, however, the castle lost its strategic importance and went to ruin. In spite of restorations the owner, the Schönberg family, built a Renaissance chateau at the foot of the old castle.

The ruins are quite well preserved. See the 250 m long walls with remains of 6 towers, the Northern ("Dicker Marten") and Southern Tower and the ruins of the Palas. Most impressive is the tower "Dicker Marten" with its 3.5 m thick walls.

If you are travelling with kids I highly recommend a visit of this castle. It is pure fun for them to climb between the ruins (safe) and to imagine the knights living and fighting there.

The castle is open in summer only. Fee is small, not to mention.
