Walk up from the Train Station
If the funicular does not run, walking is the only way to reach Augustusburg and the castle from the train station down in the valley. On the map, the distance looks harmless. Locals will tell you that the walk takes half an hour.
Rather calculate 45 minutes, and a steep ascent uphill all the way. If you are not in perfect shape, this is quite something.
The hiking trail begins below the station by the train bridge. The map on the board there does not have much in common with reality, it just helps to guess the direction. Anyway, the steepest path uphill can't be wrong.

Drahtseilbahn - Funicular
Augustusburg, located high up on a ridge above the Zschopau valley, is connected with the bottom of the valley where the train station is by a funicular. This is the easiest way to reach the town and in fact the only public transport carrier up. The bottom station is next to the train station Erdmannsdorf-Augustusburg on the DB Erzgebirgsbahn, just a short walk across the street. From the top station it is still a walk of 10-15 minutes uphill to the castle.
The funicular has been opened in 1911, 100 years ago. In the meantime it has been modernized a couple of times, latest in 2005/06. The present funicular cars were built in 1996
In case you intend to visit on a Monday, beware - the funicular does not run on Monday morning, the 13:20 ride is the first of the day.
