This restaurant is one out of several in the upscale five-star hotel Elbresidenz, which occupies the block between the Market square and the river. The restaurant Elbterrasse is located on the garden-/riverside, left corner of the hotel, seen from the river. They have a very nice terrace from where you can enjoy the fantastic view of the river and the mountains (weather permitting), but also a nice, modern and somewhat cool-ish guestroom inside. The large windows make for a nice view from there, too (see pic 2).

Service is excellent. Prices are slightly higher than average, but given the quality totally ok.

Favorite Dish: I have been there several times, always for coffee/tea and cake/dessert. On my latest visit, in March 2013, I had Mousse au chocolat with vanilla sauce, a milk coffee and an appleschorle (apple juice with sparkling mineral water). Yummy! The Mousse au chocolat was to die for ... I paid 11 Euro, tip included (pic 3).

On an earlier visit I had a piece of apple cake and a cappuccino - also very good. Don't remember how much the check was, but I guess 6 Euro w/tip.

Gasthof "Zum Baeren"

After walking through Bad Schandau and searching for a place to eat we ended up in this restaurant. The Gasthof which also rents out rooms has quite a few house guests having dinner there as well.

I don't know why but with all these house guests I felt a bit like an intruder and didn't feel at ease there. The patron was very reserved and not at all outgoing.

This seems to be an excellent place for a family holiday though.

Favorite Dish: I opted for a Schnitzel with French fries which came with salad. I must say I've had better Schnitzel before but it was edible although a bit on the tough side.

Gasthof Zum Bren

Searching for a simple dining place, nothing fancy, we came across this traditional Gasthof (Inn) located in Bad Schandau's small old town. The ambience is quite nice, interior mostly wood, the crowd mostly guests staying in the inn and locals. The hosts is a bit grumpy but not unfriendly.

Favorite Dish: I had a Soljanka (Russian soup, very popular in the former East Germany) which was very good. Main course was cured trout that came with roasted potatoes and vegetables - excellent. VT member yumyum had a Schnitzel with French fries and vegetables and was not very happy with the meat (but ate it anyway, was she hungry ... :-)). The presentation of the food was very nice - see pictures. I had a glass of white wine (fair) and yumyum had tea.

The check for both of us was 32 Euro incl. tip.

Ziegelscheune

Ziegelscheune

As the name indicates the place has originally been a manufacture for bricks. The timber-framed house goes back to 1780, an annex of stone was built around the year 1900. Over the years the building was turned into a custom station, a general store and finally a restaurant.

While the food is really good the major reason to visit the Ziegelscheune are the views - it is located right by the Elbe river and vis-a-vis the bizarre sandstone formations of the Schrammsteine. The beautifully decorated room inside is mostly deserted, everyone tries to catch a table on the terrace or in the wintergarden :-)

The place is family run and you can tell from the service and ambience. Friendly, hearty, quick, competent. A word of advice: Watch the cyclers! The Elbe bicycle trail runs between the restaurant and the terrace. And in my experience the cyclers don't really slow down here ...

Favorite Dish: Coffee and cake. The cake is always yummy, the coffee very good.

The Margarethenhof is located in the small village Gohrisch, on a large plateau above the Elbe river (west bank) and about 6 km from Bad Schandau.

This place offers a bit more upscale food than the average restaurant in the region. On special occasions like holidays they create special menus that I highly recommend. You can also just pick the dessert from that special menu e.g. - like I did once (pic #4).

The ambience inside is quite rustic with wood panelled walls but in combination with tablecloths, candles ... and the large panoramic windows offer views of the nice garden. In mild weather you can choose to sit on the terrace.

Service is very good. Prices are a bit higher than average but not by much, especially considering the high quality.

Favorite Dish: I use to come here for lunch and/or coffee+dessert on weekends quite often. Once in winter I had salmon roll with bacon, parsley potatoes and a selection of vegetables - delicious, accompanied by a glass of dry white Saxon wine and with mineral water. Dessert was chocolate cannelloni filled with mousse au chocolat on a ragout of a mix of berries with vanilla cream. The check was 25 Euro incl. tip. A steal.

On a sunny fall day I sat down on a table on their terrace sampling another yummy dessert: caramelized vanilla ice cream with apple slices with chocolate chopsticks.

Großer Winterberg mountain hut

This place, located on top of Großer Winterberg (552 m) is one of the few restaurants right in the National Park. I like it very much for the food concept: Mostly regional organic food, freshly cooked at reasonable prices. Please keep in mind that transport is not exactly easy, it is about 6.5 km away from the next village (Schmilka), accessible via a narrow and windy road.

The ambience is quite rustic (inside), the terrace is sunny, service quick and friendly.

Don't miss to climb up the viewing tower as the hotel/restaurant is surrounded by huge beech trees that obstruct the view from the restaurant.

Favorite Dish: I had Schnitzel once (yummy, organic pork, self-made crust), another time I had self-baked cake and cappuccino (delicioius).

Eiscafe Memory

my cup of ice cream

This cafe is well-known for its ice cream. They prepare it themselves after Italian recipes - the result tells. Very tasty. I had a cup of ice cream with morello cherries and whipped cream. Really good.

They also serve yummy hot chocolate (several sorts), tea and coffee as well as cocktails - thus the cafe has become a popular hang-out place for both locals and tourists.

The cafe was severely damaged a couple of times by floods - in 2002, 2006, 2010. It is amazing and commands my respect that they never gave up, renovated the cafe right away and reopened - again and again.

Wintergarten Restaurant at Parkhotel

strawberry cake and tea

This is my favourite restaurant in Bad Schandau. It is located in the Parkhotel's "Königsvilla" which was built 1887. The ambience is quite elegant - a couple of spacious rooms, the largest one a wintergarden with view over the terrace and the beautiful garden toward the river. The food is probably best characterized as mostly local with an international/fancy touch. The service is very friendly, professional, but not exactly quick (it's a spa town, after all :-)).

Another highlight is the Art Nouveau style ballroom. Ask the staff to let you have a quick look inside - it's worth it.

Favorite Dish: I've had dinner here in pre-digital camera era, so no pictures of that. More recently I had excellent cake(s) like strawberry cake (delicious) and tea/coffee (very good) a couple of times. Friends of mine use to celebrate New Year's Eve here (ballroom!) and rave about the food and drinks.

Prices are a bit higher than usual, but with coffee and cake come to not more than 5 Euro incl. tip. For an entree calculate about 15-20 Euro.

Caf Mario Gelato

This is rather a café that also offers some pizzas. It’s located in a side street and there are some tables outside. You can get the pizza in two different sizes. We only tried the pizza, and they could have been spicy. Maybe the sundae are better, they looked good!

Kopprasch's Bierstübl: Cheap restaurant

Restaurant

This small restaurant with a beer garden is situated in a rather quite street of Bad Schandau. You get local food here, it's rather cheap, but also the portions are smaller than usual. After having walked almost the whole day I could have eaten more... But the Cordon Bleu and the salad that I had were good.
