Our apartment was above this restaurant and people staying there get 10% off the bill.Their non-smokers' room is not very large, just six tables, but on nice days/evenings you can sit outside as well. The chef there has a co-operation with a local farm run by handicapped people and they only buy their provisions there. In the menu it says that this is the reason dishes are sometimes out, as they depend on this farm. It's an organic farm, so I was able to eat the meat We ate there three times, twice we had the pork chops. Very good, but the size differed a lot and it was easy to see that it hadn't been cut by professional butchers. I didn't mind, taste is more important than an exact size. They also had a very good pumpkin soup.
Surprisingly for such a small restaurant they have one of the largest selections of Scottish Single Malts I have ever seen outside Scotland, at very reasonable prices.

On our last morning we went to have breakfast in a restaurant called Alte Apotheke, as they open at 7 am and we had already packed and were ready to go home.A buffet breakfast is laid out on the counter, for 4,99 Euro set price, including one hot drink and as much juice as you like. Bread rolls, boiled eggs, jam, honey, Nutella, ham and cheese and some cereal. I thought I had taken joghurt with my cereal, but found out it was custard. Well, cereal with custard was not too bad either.
A nice selection, but I didn't like the fact that there was nothing to keep the food chilled, no fridge, nor even some ice cubes. Also the plates were not as clean as I would have liked them to be. Milk, cheese, ham etc should be kept chilled to avoid food poisoning. So , despite the good selection and the cheap price, I wouldn't go there again.

Took a walk over the Augustus bridge to take some photos of the city and right at the end of the bridge a welcoming beergarden and it was lunch time too.
Typical beergarden food and drink on offer plus great views of Dresden.
Very good.

There are many bakery shops in the city and Doll Doll has no idea why she naturally walked into this shop as its outside was under the construction and nothing could be seen from outside.
As soon as she walked into the house, the gossip between the guests, warmth in the house and smell of bakery just flew onto her face, and into her nose and ears. Lots of old people were sitting inside so it's easy to tell how good this cafe was.
Doll Doll wondered around a bit and choosed one large table. Not till the moment she sat down, three local people came and an old lady asked whether could share the table. Doll Doll immediately said yes and even wanted to move to another table in order to give them larger spaces. But the friendly lady said she could stay.
Doll Doll assumed they were a family. Their son sat in front of Doll Doll and started to talk with her while the silent dad was sat beside him. Doll Doll found he was another travel freak whom was just returned from India and said felt he was india in the last life. Doll Doll said to his mom would it bad to hear from the son that he was from India, his mom started to smile. But it seemed the arging spirit of German remained strongly as he questioned Doll Doll about the monastary kill done by Chinese government in Tibet. Doll Doll smiled and replied it's not her problem.
Later on, the conversation was getting more friendly as he taught Doll Doll that Germany had the best bakery in the world and even shared the cakes together - Doll Doll did not expect German can be so exquisive in making the food. Since both his mom and dad could not speak too much English, he became a translator or messenger to pass around the talks. Later in the air, there are lots of laughters flew out.
His mom said, isn't it a nice afternoon? Doll Doll agreed, Of course. Later, the son even invited Doll Doll to participate his younger brother's birthday party held that evening since they found out that Doll Doll was travelling alone. Doll Doll assumed they like her.
The bakery here, is probably the best that Doll Doll had throughout Germany, not only its wonderful taste, house environment, but also this family that Doll Doll naturally encountered here. You will find more interesting writings in other pages about the latter stories.
P.S. But this is not what Doll Doll looks for in Germany la.
Favorite Dish: Cakes, cakes, cakes...
Any visitors whom visit Zwinger should not miss this cafe shop in Dresden.

When it comes to beer it never ceases to amaze me how regional German drinkers are. It's not unusual for a person from one town to have not even tried beers from 30 miles away. From state to state it is even more rare. Don't get me wrong, some of the brewing giants are now making somewhat of a move towards national brands and I am not a fan of this trend. But it is still nice to see a Bavarian beer like Augustiner finally available in Dresden. This looks like quite a trendy place from the outside and I was surprised on my first visit to find it a fairly down to earth place once inside. There is free wireless which was a major attraction for me and there are small booths where you don't feel funny just having a beer or coffee if you're not hungry.
Favorite Dish: The menu was all Bavarian classics on my first visit but it has since expanded to include Bulgarian delicacies. Doreen had the Ukrainische Soljanka for 3 Euros which was a tasty and hearty soup. Meals are certainly reasonable and the beer is cheaper than in Munich! They have the full assortment of Augustiner beers on tap including their Helles, Dunkles, and Edelstof. A one liter mug is only 5.50 Euros.

The Kuppel Restaurant Yenidze wouldn’t normally get much interest from me. Sure, it is bound to have a great view but I find such places to be tourist traps with lackluster food and inflated prices. But this unique building certainly garners your attention no matter your interests. Looking amazingly like a mosque it stands out even in a city with many notable buildings of various architectural styles.
Favorite Dish: I was initially drawn not only to the building but also by a friend that told me there was a small beer garden on its roof terrace. Unfortunately it was closed on the winter day we arrived but we were hungry and it was nice and warm inside. Despite it being empty we were told our chosen table was reserved and then it took forever to get a menu. That the service was inattentive is an understatement even in service devoid Germany. Once we got the food it was certainly tasty enough. We all had Saxony’s version of potato soup which comes resplendent with ample amounts of sausages so a filling meal. It was a bit pricey at 6.10 Euros and I’ve had it on other occasions where it was refilled on request but in this type of place it was not an option. I had a Kostritzer, the former East Germany’s most famous dark beer for 2.90 Euros and it went well with the meal. Yes, it did have great views of the city and the building is a must see but aside from coming to the beer garden one day it’s doubtful I’ll go to the restaurant again.

Munzgasse is a one block street extending from the Frauenkirche to the stairs up to Bruhl's Terrace, lined by a large number of restaurants catering to the tourist hordes. It is one of Dresden's oldest lanes dating back to 1550 in the reign of Prince Moritz and was a site for numerous restaurants and taverns centuries ago. First named Big Fisherman's Lane, it was changed in 1849 to Munzgasse or Coin Lane. After the WWII bombings, only debris remained and the street has been totally rebuilt. Nearly every building has a dining establishment on ground level. Many offer German menus, but there is a branch of a chain of Australian restaurants named Ayer's Rock as well as a Spanish restaurant, all filled with visitors to Dresden's historic center. Most restaurants offer full meals as well as alcoholic beverages with little in the way of light fare or pastries.
More interested in a light bite, we ended at the Cafe zur Frauenkirche directly facing the famed church and the perfect spot for people-watching while enjoying some very good pastries and excellent coffee. However this crowded cafe does have an extensive prepared menu as well with breakfast from 0800 and a moderate selection of salads, pastas, and German specialties including the house special - seems very similar to the house special at Am Thor with three meats - with entree prices up to 15Eu. The described sides are intriguing - check the menu out - it seemed far more adventurous than many of the other German restaurants on Munzgasse.

Looking like nothing more than one of the ubiquitous pubs lifted off the streets of Manhattan's Upper East Side, Am Thor provided a remarkable meal at comfort-inducing prices. The dark leather and wood interior with a central bar were welcoming and many tables were occupied even on a weekday night by a very local crowd. The response to our use of English was considerable surprise and little experience. But the reception was friendly and we settled in happily to a great meal.
The specialty of the house, recommended by the server, is the chest pain inducing Thor special at about 11 Eu with smoked bacon, pork steak, and beef steak in great spicy gravy accompanied by red beans, veggies, and spectacular roast potatoes. But the absolute star was the grilled salmon filet ordered by P with green noodles and more roast potatoes. The salmon was so lightly grilled it almost seemed poached, impeccably fresh and tasty. A superb entree by any standard - probably our best entree in Germany ( and we ate well ). Portions were large, we passed on desserts, the beer was cold.
Favorite Dish: Based on one excellent meal and our impression of Am Thor, this is a restaurant we can recommend very highly.

We were recommended to this German restaurant set below ground level which also serves as an antique store and auction house and found the setting remarkable and the food excellent. Even the tables, couches, and chairs are antiques. Little matches, but it all fits together. The slow somewhat disinterested service allows the opportunity to check out the filled cabinets, walls, and floor space all crowded with items for sale. There is some outside dining on a narrow not particularly attractive street, but the large interior seats at least 150 in a unique setting.
Camembert with raspberries and a raspberry sauce was an appetizer large enough to share after a day of sampling pastries at every turn. P enjoyed an entree of noodles in a meat sauce, but I hit the jackpot - a large slice of beef almost like a brisket rollatini style around a dark spicy mustard filled with smoked bacon bits - heavy, unhealthy, delicious - with as I recall roasted vegetables and potatoes. An entree worth remembering. Not delicate food - we walked back to the hotel.
Worth noting - breakfast and lunch are served and hours are 0900 -2400. We saw no access for the challenged.

While the VT Meeting in 2005 Ingo (german_eagle) invited me to this excellent restaurant. You can sit in the inner courtyard and admire the façades of the Kunsthof. Although it is not the cheapest restaurant the fantastic view, the excellent kitchen and the huge selection of wines compensate the higher price. According to their website the restaurant was awarded in 1998 and 2002 as the best in Dresden.
