I'm really into history, and before I went to Dresden, I knew the main church had been bombed to rubble in February 1945 in the firebombing. I read an old tourist book lent to me by a Polish friend before I went, so I would know the main places and how to find them. It showed the ruins of the church, and that's what I expected to find. However, to my amazement and delight, they were rebuilding the thing. It's supposed to be done by 2008, and what's more, they're incorporating some of the rubble into the building. Here are pictures...
There're dozens upon dozens trailers around the site full of the rubble, probably figuring out where it will go in the reconstruction.
The symbol for the destroyed Dresden, the Frauenkirche is being rebuild again!!! It is financed by the people of Dresden and others, who fighted for the reconstruction over many of years. Now that the GDR regime no longer exists it has been possible to finally start the reconstruction. Under the SED the ruin was held as a rememberance.
Looks great from the outside, and a huge queue to visit the inside when we visited so gave it a miss, must suggest another visit to Dresden for us.
Frauenkirche was destroyed during the 1945 bombing of Dresden the ruins were kept as a reminder of the horrors of the war but now, as you see in the picture, it is being rebuilt.
Church of our Lady
This Cathedral is called the Church of our Lady or "Frauenkirche".
It is undergoing some restoration, but still it is a lovely site to see.
