    Gluhbier?!

by richiecdisc Updated Jan 27, 2008

the crew gets down to a hot brew

As if gluhwein were not enough, we discovered gluhbier on our last trip to the Christmas markets of Dresden. I was never able to find it while in Belgium but had heard of it. In fact, the beer is a Belgian one, Liefman's, a cherry kriek I would normally find too sweet. But as served warm at the Christmas market it was a sourish departure from the normal spiced hot wine offered. They went down a bit too easily and after many gluhweins it was a good thing I had a designated driver that night. Thanks D. :)

    Bring plenty of Euro

by LiLz Written Jan 1, 2007

This isn't a danger, but it is sound advice: Be sure to bring plenty of Euro with you. I was surprised at how often vendors didn't take credit cards and getting to the train station to exchange cash can be out of the way and inconvenient.

    Floods in Spring

    Flood in Spring 2005

Mostly every year in spring you can see such a flood in Dresden. The Elb has mostly around 5 - 6 meter. The reason is the melting snow in the mountains of Czech.
So you can not go by car, bus or just walking... on the street "Terassenufer" and you have stop before.

Bahnhof Bathrooms Warning For Another Reason

    by grishaV1 Written May 15, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Another "after dark" warning about the tunnels of the bahnhof, and especially the main rarilroad station in Dresden. Some certain kinds of people hang out, some druggies and things in the many tunnels, not always are they giving you a problem but its better to be cautious. Just keep walking and they leave you alone if they ask for money or something. Itýs the best thing to do, to be aggressive towards them first is only asking for trouble.

Along Konigstrasse I think is the name, inside the tunnels you most likely will find skateboarding teens and others who hang out. They can be some aggressive whether you say something to them or not, so itýs not a good place to be alone in or just a few. Just ignore and keep walking. This is not all youths or druggies or people hanging out in bahnhofs, of course. Just be aware anyway, some just wish a polite respect you would show any one then you are usually fine.

Bahnhof Bathrooms Warning For One Reason

    by grishaV1 Written May 15, 2004

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Itýs especially an "after-dark" or "late night" warning about bahnhof bathrooms in Dresden, and really could be also for Berlin or other big German cities as well. You will notice that a certain kinds of men hang out there. Letýs just say they are looking for a few minutes of fun.

I would say avoid the bathrooms all together if you can, or go in do your business and leave (well, if its why you are there and not the other reason haha!). Be aware that you might see something you didnýt wish to. Yet know also this is not all of "us", this is a particular group most of the times, and not necessarily "gays". If you have children, certainly, donýt send them in alone, avoid it all together if possible.

A bit Gross, but Necessary Warning!

    by grishaV1 Written May 3, 2004

Nice scenery but watch your feet!

Yes, this is a bit gross warning but it is necessary and given in the best of spirit :-) Some people have commented before of the amount of dog *** on the streets of Berlin. Well, sometimes you see it but not the same amount I found in Dresden.

Walking along one night Alaunstrasse my companion slips and nearly falls, "***!" he says spontaneously. And *** indeed it was, dog ***. Avoid it, watch your feet, especially at night. Besides not wanting it on your shoes, falling down into it would be really awful.

no road signs and traffic lights

by JimKnopf Written Nov 26, 2003

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Please be careful if you walk through the old city, there are no road signs and traffic lights. If you want to cross a street you must look that there comes no car. Also if you cross a street with traffic lights after your visit in the old city. If you walk through the day in the old city and comes out of the old city consitsts the danger to across the street with red traffic lights. Really. I speak from my own experience. :(
Why no traffic lights and road signs? The old city is under protection of historical monuments, because it is forbidden to do it in the old city.

    Flag waving individual

This guy had a Communist flag and was waving it to attract you over his way on Prage Strasse, a pedestrian walkway and shopping area. Liberty and freedom for all, I guess

    Traffic camera - Dresden

Yes, Dresden has speed camera's; and many of them.

Bad thing is they use IR flash you never notice (untill the fine is presented to you).

    traffic light from GDR times

I felt quite safe there, but I guess with Dresden being a faily big city, just take the usual precautions! Pickpockets can be found everywhere......
