    Goldener Löwe

    by german_eagle Updated Jul 5, 2015

Right on the Markt square in Lauenstein is this traditional inn/restaurant. I've been there once, on a December day with really ugly weather with sleet and wind - the restaurant was sort of a lifesaver.

We had a quick, small lunch there before visiting the church and we came back after we were done with the church for dessert. See the pictures - it looked yummy and it was yummy. Soljanka (pic 3) is a typical East Germany specialty, a leftover from the communist times and sort of 'imported' from the Soviet Union: A hot soup based on tomatoes, with all the leftovers from previous day(s), like meat, pickled veggies, onions of course ... topped with a bit of sour cream. My Ragout Fin was really fine (yummy). Dessert was delicious, too. Don't remember what we paid, but it was very reasonable.

The place is family run, friendly and very good service, nice ambience with Christmas decorations in December.

Update from 2014: Goldener Löwe is closed. The guy from the nearby bakery told me that the hosts retired and are desperately searching for someone to take over the restaurant on a lease. Too bad!

Update 2015: They serve lunch Monday through Friday (workdays, not holidays). It's basically meant for locals and workers in town - they order until 8.30 the same day by phone (035054 - 298270). Usually they have one dish with meat and one vegetarian that change daily and three dishes that are available all week. For a tourist I'd recommend to phone the day before, ask about the menu and order if you wish. Prices are dirt cheap - 3.20 Euro.

    Bakery Richter

    by german_eagle Written Jun 9, 2014

Right on the Markt square is bakery Richter. They have one table and two seats inside and two benches in front of their bakery to relax and enjoy their products. On both of my visits so far I lucked out weather wise and rested on a bench outside.

Don't expect a big selection of fancy cakes. They cater to the locals and few tourists. The choice of cakes is varied enough, though, and really delicious. When I visited in October 2013 I had "Reformation bread" (yeast dough with raisins etc.) and one piece of each of their cookies plus a latte macchiato. In June 2014 I had a piece of Eierschecke cake, cookies again, a tiny "pig's ear" (puff pastry) and a cappuccino. Everything was delicious. The cookies cost 1 Euro per 100 g (a steal), all in all I paid a bit more than 4 Euro. Of course I bought more cookies afterward and took them home ... They didn't last long. LOL

Goldener Löwe: Hot Soljanka and Time Travel

    by Kathrin_E Updated Dec 29, 2010

Goldener Löwe, the Golden Lion, is a typical small-town inn with local food, but in very good quality. It is located right in market square on the corner of the street that leads to the church. Hard to miss. Service was quick and friendly and the food good and abundant.

The paintings on the wall (photos 4 and 5) tell an amazing story... Obviously the ancestors of Lauenstein's inhabitants had some kind of time machine and were able to travel through the centuries. paintings show people in medieval dress, according to the inscriptions from the 14th century, but they are standing in front of the renaissance palace and the church with its baroque steeple...

Favorite Dish: A hot spicy Soljanka is just the perfect soup to have when wet and chilled to the bone on such a winter's day!

The hot chocolate also deserves a honourable mentioning.
