Monuments / Sights, Leipzig
Sorry for the picture, my friend was more important than those funny creatures by contemporary sculptor Bernd Göbel.
These figures reflect types of the East German society. My friend is Czech.
Direction: not far from Augustus Square, on the Grimmaische Strasse
Favorite thing: Leipzig is heaven for Art Nouveau lovers. There are many excellent places with fine examples of this style in the old town. You cannot miss the Cafe Riquet (with the elephants), Speck's Hof Arcade or the facade of the house next to St. Thomas church (see picture).
The shop in the Riquet House was well known for chocolate and pralines. Riquet is the name of the trade company which dealt with japanese and chinese goods. Now a cafe/bar is located inside.
Especially the beautiful roof and the two elefant heads at the entrace attracted my attention.
The Riquet House is also typical for Jugendstil
Go to Leipzig tower ..i dont remember its name now and should ask about it.It represents victory against the french army of Napoleon Bonaparte.'The tower you surely mean is called: 'Völkerschlachtdenkmal' (= Monument of the Battle of the Nations)' ***This correction is made by VT friend Leipzig****
Now some of people commit suicide by throwing theirselves from that tower.
Fondest memory: I'm not going to forget the train station (bahnhof)
the huge snow,,,and of course the eastern stamp of the city which tries to follow the west.
Favorite thing: You find lions like this everywhere in the city. Totally 100 lions which are decorated in different ways. If I remember correct the lion is part of Leipzig's city arm.
