building construction by Mariajoy It seemed that there wasn't a single street where there wasn't some sort of construction or renovation going on. This is of course "a good thing" for the city and tourism generally but some pavements and roads were blocked and diversions in place. A few nice views and photographic shots were obscured by scaffolding, but this is just a very minor moan in an otherwise really beautiful city. Leave a Comment

Someone's Shoes. by antistar As with most German cities, Leipzig is a very safe place. My personal view is that Leipzig is even safer than most, and even the station doesn't appear to attract the usual reprobates that most other cities suffer from. It does have a few crazies and beggars, and there's a small risk of racial abuse from a tiny minority of neo-Nazis, but for the most part it is a very, very relaxed city. The crazies appear harmless too. The shoes pictured belonged to one of them. I took the picture before realizing he owned them. He didn't say anything to me. He just walked over to them, barefoot, as if he'd lost them, put them on, and then took them off again frantically, before walking away and repeating himself again. Leave a Comment

Since the Stasi no longer exist..it is worthy of a visit to go to the rundereck building which houses a Stasi exhibit showing some of their undercover tactics to spy on the local population. Leave a Comment

by Leipzig Watch your speeding especially on Schkeuditzer Kreuz (Schkeuditz Autobahn-intersection)! A lot of accidents and speed traps!! Avoid city-circle and important Bundesstraßen (federal roads) during rush hour! Always be aware of the many potholes! Leave a Comment

It became a particularly familiar sight, but is every train station in the former East Germany under some sort of reconstruction??? Probably for the forthcoming World Cup I suppose, which probably explains the reason why the stadiums were also being rebuilt??? Leave a Comment

by zzaappedd If you can, check hours of operation and special dates for the sights you're interested on. Save yourself some very valuable time and call ahead, ask the hotel people to do it for you, etc. this applies to all travels, but here it would have save us some waiting time. Leave a Comment
