The Saxon climate is determined by frequent weather changes. There is precipitation all the year round. According to the amount of precipitation the northwest is the driest region, the wettest is the Erzgebirge. Due to thunderstorms July is the wettest month, the sunniest is May (annual mean values).
The summers are most of time warm and sunny with occasional thunderstorms. In the lowlands the maximum mean temperature is between 23 and 25°C (73-77°F), at nights it drops to 13°C (55°F). In the mountains temperature is about 18°C (64°F) at days and 10°C (50°F) at nights.
The winters are most of time chilly with occasional rain and snow showers. In the lowlands the maximum mean temperature is between -2 and 4°C (28 - 39°F), at nights it usually drops below freezing point. In the mountains temperature is usually below freezing point with a high chance of snow.
Springs and autumns are determined by extreme weather changes. Freezing weather are as likely as hot days with up to 30°C (86°F).
If going in winter, make sure to bring warm clothes and especially a hat. Rain gear is essential too. It seems there's only two kinds of weather in the winter: cold and sunny with snow or cool and rainy. I prefer the former myself.
Photo Equipment: A wide angle lens is great not only for landscape photography, but also for getting good shots of buildings, which are often too close to fit into conventional lenses. A tripod is essential for getting good shots at night.
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Hiking boots for the Elbsandsteingebirge.
Miscellaneous: A great local guide like D, she's the best.
