The Saxon climate is determined by frequent weather changes. There is precipitation all the year round. If going in winter, make sure to bring warm clothes and especially a hat. Rain gear is essential too. It seems there's only two kinds of weather in the winter: cold and sunny with snow or cool and rainy. I prefer the former myself.
A wide angle lens is great not only for landscape photography, but also for getting good shots of buildings, which are often too close to fit into conventional lenses. A tripod is essential for getting good shots at night.
