Neo-styles and Art Nouveau in Pirna

    by german_eagle Written Apr 16, 2011

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: The visitors concentrate - with good reason - on the old town of Pirna and ignore the districts west and south of it, mostly due to lack of time or because they don't know these offer interesting architecture as well. Granted, these buildings that were erected in the late 19th and early 20th century are not of *that* outstanding quality as the medieval and Renaissance buildings in the old town, but they are still worth a quick look.

A good introduction are the blocks along Gartenstraße that leads straight from the train station to the old town. Most buildings were erected between 1885 and 1905 and show elements of Historistic (Neo-styles) and Art Nouveau architecture. Starting from the train station you'll pass nice villas on the right side (# 18, 19, 20) with Art Nouveau details. Quite remarkable is also the Post office, a Neo-Renaissance building. Closer to the old town are some houses with very ornate facades, gables and oriel windows in a mix of styles.

Around park-like Ernst-Thälmann-Platz farther south are some interesting public buildings. The Lessing High School's facade has beautiful Art Nouveau decorations (1902). The vocational school from 1925 has a much less ornate facade but the entrances are highlighted with sculptures on top. On the opposite end of the square is the rather non-descript Hospital church, erected 1914/16.

    Just ask!

by ATLC Updated Oct 24, 2010

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: We parked our car (for free after 1800 hrs) and walked into a shop to ask for the area with restaurants.

We walked that way, made a wrong turn and asked again. A nice man was just closing off his mens wear shop and told us we'd have plenty of choice around the market place (Altstadt) and named Spanish and Greek restaurants.
No, no, we told him. We want proper German food! So he pointed us to Ratsherrenstuben, a traditional old place that we would certainly like.

And so we set off to find this place which turned out to be quite easy.

    Views from the bridge

    by german_eagle Written Oct 12, 2003

Favorite thing: For a good view of Pirna do the short walk from the old town or the railway station to the bridge. For good light for taking photos go afternoon. The old town is very picturesque with its old houses, towers and the huge roof of St. Mary's church. The river and hills add still more beauty ...

Fondest memory: As you can see from the picture I did not go to the bridge ... I took the photo from a steam boat, passing Pirna. Also very enjoyable!
